Platinum - A web browser for humans

Platinum - A web browser for humans

Around the end of 2022, I started an Electron-based browser called Platinum which was a fork of Catalyst. I have spent the last week writing a new browser in Vala using GTK. I am pleased to report that it's now in a usable state.

The GitHub repo is at platinum-browser/platinum-gtk. There is one release.

FAQ:
  • Why GTK? It's a well-supported platform that's easy to use.
  • Why Vala? Other languages' GTK bindings are often unwieldy. Vala is built for the express purpose of creating GTK apps, making it very easy to do so.
  • What OSes does this work on? Theoretically, it should work on any OS if you compile it from source. Currently, automatic release builds are compiled for x86-64 Linux only.
  • Aah! My eyes! Is there a dark theme? Themes are being worked on.
  • Can you add [insert feature]? Create a PR or issue for it! Although it can be added by maintainers if it's not too much of a hassle. If it's rejected, you'll be able to create a plugin for it at some point.
  • Why, exactly, did you make a Scratch forums topic for this, of all things? I wanted to harken back to when the ATs were still alive and when I made the original topic.

Unfortunately, it's a limitation of GTK's Notebook widget, which I'm using for tabs at the moment

Turns out it was what some may call a “skill issue.” Notebook.set_action_widget lets you add a widget there. The change is in commit d32a4e2.

Once themes are implemented you can make that yourself. I'm not touching liquid glass with a ten-foot pole.

There are instructions on the GitHub release page for how to install it on Linux (Or Crostini, probably)

Yes, although it is not step-by step, only 2 steps, and I tried, yet it is very, very complicated to run all of this.

What steps are you doing and what is the issue you are having?

I am trying to run the application. I cannot and the terminal says that there is “no such file”.

Can you provide further information? Are you sure that you downloaded the file in the right place?
