“When everything's made to be broken”
TW: homophobia
Evan was born with his brothers Vincent and Rue, and he was named Eva at birth, by his mother, Dawn. He never knew his father, though in the later years, he wished he had. As a young child, he was the favorite child, the smartest, best behaved, most popular, mos athletic, and even though Dawn said she never picked favorites to all of Evan's friends' moms, it was very obvious he was her favorite, mostly because she gave him ten times more attention than his brothers, who were chaotic and aggressive, though Vincent was slightly quieter than Rue, and just did what Rue asked, which why he was interpreted as aggressive by teachers and friends and family. Evan, though, was the favorite, at least until he became a teenager. He didn't feel like a girl, he loved sports and running and hated pink and makeup, which some girls didn't like (LIKE ME IMAOOOO), but it went deeper than that. He just didn't think he felt female anymore, but never knew what he *did* feel like, until one day, his friend, Chime, told him about being trans, and it was finally something that felt right for Evan! He knew what he felt like, and it felt amazing! He, excited, told his brothers, who nodded, understanding, but when he walked up to Dawn, it went wrong. “Mom,” he smiled softly, because he called Dawn ‘Mom’ back then, because they loved each other, “Could you, um, use he/him when you refer to me? I-” Dawn cut him off, shaking her head. “No,” she said. “Eva, (his name was Eva before he changed it) You're a girl and will stay that way,” Evan tried to cut her off, but she continued, half with a stupefied expression, half a sort of arrogant amused sort of smirk. “You're my DAUGHTER, and will stay that way, whether you like it or not. I don't like how you're thinking, so don't go around, telling people that. If you do, I'm going to ground you. For THREE. MONTHS.” Evan turned away, in tears. “I'm not your daughter, or your son!” he cried. “Why won't you accept me for ME? That's what-” his voice cracked. “Parents are supposed to do…” he turned away, and rushed up to his room. He had a plan. A desperate one, but still a plan. He was going to run away. And soon! He didn't care if he wouldn't ever see his friends away, he couldn't stay with Dawn anymore. He wouldn't have time to say goodbye to friends. Thankfully, his room had a backdoor, leading to his backyard. He normally used it when hiding from his brothers, when them and Dawn were arguing, but now he had a greater use for it. He packed his stuff, and rushed out of his room, then crashed into Chime, who was- Evan forgot about this- coming over to hang out and practice some *insert sport here imao Idk any sports cats could play*. But Evan was busy, he couldn't stand Dawn any longer, even after a few minutes with her, it had gotten dangerous. But on the other hand, he REALLY wanted his best friend's advice. So he blurted it out: “I'm running away.” and, naturally, Chime was horrified, but he didn't try to stop Evan, just wanted to know what happened. But Evan couldn't explain it. He couldn't relive those awful moments ever again! So he just told Chime. “I'm sorry,” and surprised him, shoving him into the mud and running off, unknowing he would never see his family or best friend ever again. He escaped into the woods, which were incredibly large woods, miles and miles and miles long. He didn't care or think about it, though, he just wanted to get away, at least for a little while. But he also didn't know he'd get lost and never see his home again. (I'm crying rn halp TT) He walked for days, eating only wild blueberries and other fruits and drinking from ponds or streams, and discovered that, to hide from larger predators, he could cover himself in the blueberries he ate and leaves from trees. “What sort of blueberry or leaf would want to be or something different?” he thought. “Dawn was right, there IS something wrong with me…” he now no longer referred to his mother by ‘Mom,’ instead just referring to her as Dawn when he talked to himself in early mornings or late at night. He knew he should become a hermit and settle down somewhere here in the forest, but he couldn't stand the thought of being all alone. He had never done that before, with so many friends, allies, and his two brothers and…. Dawn. He just wanted a companion, even if it was a kitten. He kept walking. And walking. And walking. He lost track of the time he was trying to keep to stay sane, he slowly started to forget how to talk to others, to have manners, and his normally well-groomed fur was now knotted, shaggy, and covered in dirt and blueberry juice. But there were some upsides on being one with nature, though. He knew the stars by heart from his sleepless nights, he could forage and was stronger and more athletic than he ever was before. He was lonely and slowly going insane, though. “Loneliness and insanity are twin houseguests and it’s hard to entertain one without inviting the other in as well.” he mumbled to himself as he stared out at the sky one night. He read that in a book. (Alone by Megan E Freeman btw) Somewhere… Somewhere… Where was he? Good question. As he stared into the stars, he felt a pain in his chest. He started crying, screaming into the night. What was happening to him? He was desperate. He needed the answer. To the question. Where was he? Would he be remembered when he died, would he leave an imprint on the world? Or would he be forgotten, faded into memory. Everyone would be faded, except for the famous and rich. Well, even the famous and rich would disappear. When all catkind disappear, so will be the memories of the ones who tried to be remembered, to be imprinted, what was the point? WHAT WAS THE POINT? He didn't know if he screamed or thought it, but when he heard the echoes, he knew he screamed it. But when he thought about it, he was repeating it in his head. He didn't knew he screamed it, he ASSUMED it. He just assumed… He… He just assumed many things…. Like… Like Dawn. Would she actually ground him for months? Or was it his imagination? Or was it real, but she was just… Surprised? He didn't know, the memory had become a hazy mist from his time in the forest. Maybe she loved him! Maybe she missed him, and was looking for him! That would be amazing! She probably was, he thought. He was just a stupid teenager back then, and… He was supposed to come back…. That was what he told himself. And it sounded like a promise, at least to him. He would never break a promise. Ever. Finally, as his restless mind drifted to sleep, he thought one last thought before he woke up the next day. “I'll come back. I PROMISE.”
“I just want you to know who I am”
