I literally saw it here earlier this day but now it's gone. Is it because it sometimes leads to inappropriate content being shown?

It seems like it has been. Inappropriate content is probably the reason why.

This happened before on the front page, they once removed recently shared projects on the front page in 2007 due to innaporate content, then they restored it in 2009-2010 but only for scratchers, and they removed that in 2018 for the same reason, replacing it with recent on trending, then now it's removed again.

I don't think removing the “recent” option from the Explore page was to affect hackers, but rather to reduce the chances if inappropriate contnet being shown.

As for the hacker issue, The Scratch Team is already working on it by changing passwords and emails that they feel are in danger, due to recent data breaches.

People, put hackers and people you spam inappropriate projects as the same thing.(As far as I'm concerned they might as well be the same person.) I'm just glad that ST is now trying to fight the hackers before they even do anything!

The file also wasn't updated for 2 years.
