Change the Scratch Domain

I think this would be possible, but the mit.edu domain is still on the website, so what about the “MIT Accessibility” page in the footer?

I don't see why such links couldn't just continue to exist - Scratch's existing relationship to MIT would remain the same regardless of the URL, so any current pages like the “MIT Accessibility” would remain the same with reference to Scratch.

Sites on scratch.org redirect to the mit.edu domain already. Examples:
scratch.org
scratch.org/explore
scratch.org/users/scratchcat
even scratch.org/discuss/topic/467366/

That's the not same as changing the domain.

Also, since when has it been doing that?

It's clear that, at least to an extent, Scratch still works with MIT in some regards, in fact, Mitch Resnick (a professor at MIT) is a chairman on their board of directors.[1] If Scratch Foundation is going to work with MIT in some respects, such as their accessibility program, then that doesn't matter so much; this wouldn't prevent Scratch from linking to or associating with MIT, basically, all this suggestion is suggesting is that Scratch change its domain to reflect that it is officially a separate entity from MIT.

I know, but it works for now. All of the site's links would take a while to move (considering that there are a few THOUSANDS OF MILLIONS of links that would need to be redirected).
Not sure when it changed, but you should probably edit OP to say that.

That's not how web servers work. They didn't need to manually create millions of redirects, they simply need to deploy a server that redirects any page to it's equivalent page (IE, the same path) on the domain that is being redirected to.

Edit: actually, I realized another thing you could be saying: generally if you're just changing a domain, there doesn't really need to be any moving of pages. You just point your new domain to the same IP address and then you're basically done.

I could, but it's nowhere near necessary information for this suggestion.

It's worthy of note that a whole host of other, much larger websites have changed their domain name swiftly and without angst for existing links; and changing the domain would not be akin to getting rid of the scratch.mit.edu domain name.

I don't see any reason to do this, scratch.mit.edu works just fine

I think maybe this suggestion maybe accepted because https://scratch.org takes you to https://scratch.mit.edu so… reported to be closed.

it isnt, the suggestion is to change the entire domain, so all scratch.mit.edu links turn into scratch.org, the scratch.org link redirects to the mit.edu link, as you said, but the suggestion is saying that the .mit.edu redirects to the .org link, and the .org link would be the new link

The purpose of this extension isn't to make scratch.org a redirect, it's to make scratch.org the actual URL of the site.

Didn't I talk about this in the OP?

Counter: “If it ain't broke, don't fix it.”

I dislike this kind of counter argument, especially when something is broken: Scratch being under mit.edu makes it look like it's developed by MIT, which it isn't. Additionally, this kind of mindset leads to things never changing because people don't think they're “broken.” Make better counter arguments.

Since scratch.org now redirects to scratch.mit.edu - it seems that we have the best of both worlds and further discussion is unnecessary.
