Let's talk about Experimental Music

is a genre really considered experimental if it's been proven that it can sound good and has been sounding good for the last few decades?

The term “experimental” in music doesn't necessarily mean that the genre hasn't been proven to sound good or hasn't been successful over decades. Instead, it signifies a continuous spirit of innovation and exploration within the genre. Even if certain experimental styles have become established and appreciated over time, they can still be considered experimental if they continue to push boundaries and explore new ideas. It's about the ongoing process of challenging norms and pursuing new creative directions rather than a fixed state of being unproven or unpopular.

Just started getting into krautrock as I just finished the famous CAN trilogy (Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi, Future Days). Future days was prob my favorite since I liked the ambient feel a lot.

But.. my favorite experimental artist is definitely Danny Brown. I'll just use this thread as an exscuse to promote/mention him since I've literally seen NO ONE talking about him on the hiphop thread!

If you want to listen something truly experimental, you got to listen Autechre
BASED.

I have also listened to quite a few Gescom releases before too so
I never listened Gescom, will hopefully do it one day.
I just discovered a new EP and apparently it's a collab between Aphex Twin and Squarepusher?
I'm marking that on my backlog.

i like larsht_'s music. only problem: I have no idea how I'm supposed to explain larsht_ in a way that doesn't make me A) sound like a weird person or B) get me banned off this site (due to some of the song names being NSFS)

I dunno if it counts here, but I really really love Jungle.
And I'm addicted to the Bomberman Hero OST.

In the wake of Doshin, the GIANT is pretty experimental. It kind of sounds like a blend of psychedelic music and Spongebob.

Autechre anyone? I listened to some of their early stuff in the 90's but now their music is very intense and complicated and i'm not sure how I feel about it.

I know this is kind of an old message, but I used to be hyperfixated on Autechre's music one point in 2021. In fact I even have Tri Repetae on CD.

I've gotten into early Squarepusher. Really good drill-n-bass.
