How much megabytes can a scratch project hold/have?

Hi people.

For a more lengthy question: How much data can a Scratch project hold until it can't anymore?

How much megabytes can a scratch project hold/have?

Individual assets ( a asset is a costume or sound file ) cannot exceed have up to 10 MB.

The project.json files ( code, information about sprites and assets, list values in a project ) cannot exceed 5 MB

However, It's worth noting that these are the only size limits which means there is no limit on overall project size. Which means theoretically you can have a project that's 100 MB or more, as long as it does not exceed either of these limits (although such a project will take a very long time to load and save and this also can vary depending on the device being used )

More information about Misconceptions about the project size limit can found on this topic.

Theoretically, you could make a scratch project that’s 107GB big. Yes, gigabytes. Although it’s theoretical, as your computer would likely explode before then.

It's a theory. He said “107GB” because normal computers can't load that.

The metadata for a costume is around 188 bytes (if the name is short). If you fill 5'000'000 bytes of the project.json with that, then you have 26'595 costumes, all of which can be up to 10MB. This way the project contains ~266GB data (but then it's hard fit in the code that reads the data from the costumes)

Sound metadata take less space but data stored in sounds can't be read by the code in the project

I heard on an episode of the SR cast that the costumes/sounds can take up either 180/280 gigabytes (forgot which one) and the blocks json file can take up 5 gigabytes
