Support for webp files
I can get plenty of file extension conversions to work on iOS/iPadOS, albeit you have to save the image to your files (not photos) and turn on “show all file extensions”, but it does work.doesn’t work on mobile devices, at least iOS I know it works on Windows and Chrome OS. You just simply type “.png” at the end and it will let you upload it. I don't know about Mac or Linux, or mobile devices.
But even then, you can probably just paste/upload the webp file into a paint editor or online converter and then save it as a png.
you'd have to use an online converter
I would try that now, but I don't have an iOS or iPadOS device with me at the moment.

If you're using Scratch you know about computers. support for people who don't know about computers.
Yeah, it's fairly obscure and relatively new (iOS/iPadOS 16 or 17, I forget which one of those two. For reference the latest major version is 18 at time of writing). I only found out about it because I had to convert some .txt files to JSON.if i have to go to files and toggle something on im just gonna stick with cloudconvert tbh I can get plenty of file extension conversions to work on iOS/iPadOS, albeit you have to save the image to your files (not photos) and turn on “show all file extensions”, but it does work.

You can just remake the file end to PNG or JPG/JPEG (is there a difference?) I can’t upload webp files, so should we have scratch support them for once?
If you say “no support”, I’m fine with that.
I’m not asking for support.
Thank you!
So there's really no point in creating support.

as mentioned, for images, you can just rename the file and manually change the filename extension to png, so don’t really see why it can’t be added.
JPEG does not have an alpha channel You can just remake the file end to PNG or JPG/JPEG (is there a difference?)
So there's really no point in creating support.

However, sometimes, WEBP images may be animated or use a format not compatible with JPEG or PNG, so renaming it will corrupt it, which leaves the only choice being the use of sketchy converter sites to change it to a format that is supported by Scratch, which is something that seems needlessly complicated. as mentioned, for images, you can just rename the file and manually change the filename extension to png, so don’t really see why it can’t be added.

For the animated ones a converter is probably needed, but expect a low quality result.

But for ones that aren't compatible with PNG, you can just paste them into a paint editor and save them as PNG, so no online converter is needed.

works on my windows laptop. adding a built-in converter can’t be that hard, right?Keyword: Chromebook No support
Its not that hard to convert webp images to pngs if your on a chromebook just remame the file from “Balling.webp to Balling.png”

Support for webp files
This is from a duplicate thread, but I thought it important to share here as it is a strong argument for webp support.
I'm a teacher and my kids often want to upload custom sprites. I cannot express how hard it is to get them to understand that they can't just change the file extension from webp to jpg and have it work. Webp is literally everywhere now, it seems to be the most used file format on the internet. Scratch is for kids; I don't want them to be using sketchy conversion sites or having to struggle with converting an image. Plus, they are all using Chromebooks, which means we can't use local apps to convert them, like paint or photoviewer. Please support this! I hate webp as much as the next, but I'm not going to expect a student to jump through the same hoops I do to convert files.
Thank you for your time.

That is the eternal question. Support. Why did google make .webp it just made life difficult for everyone(devs and users)
I've never met a single person in support of WEBP files. They're universally hated.
Support. Maybe add a built-in conversion mechanism?
