Meet A Star
Dates: 01/04/2025 - 01/05/2025
Event project: Meet A Star | Event
Choose a star or any astronomical object and make a project that presents it. You can include fun facts, related scientific discoveries or explanations of a related physical phenomenon. Stars and objects presented this way will be added to Star Vault with their descriptions.

Data goals
Stars are also being slowly added to the newest version. They are being added according to the following order:
1. 25 nearest stars ✅
2. +25 brightest stars (as seen from Earth) ✅
3. Stars left in the first version of Star Vault ✅
4. Random stars ✅

You can also propose a star or any other kind of object to be added by posting on this forum thread. By proposing a star or a planet, you are also proposing the whole star system. For example, Proxima Centauri is part of the triple star Alpha Centauri, which also contains planets.

Future updates
This is a list of important updates that will happen in the near future.

Constellations
A button will allow to show constellations' edges in the 3D map.

Extended search filters
The search tab will include more filters such as distance, luminosity class, number of stars/planets, and eventually others.
Note: this is likely a large update!

Questions and suggestions
Any questions or suggestions concerning Star Vault are welcome! You can post them in the projects' comment sections or in this thread.

Update
I added to the new Star Vault a tab system that allows the user to open several search tabs. These tabs are meant to contain data about a selected star system, star, planet or any other object. The search feature isn't yet implemented. However, you can already appreciate the settings and changelog tabs. The 3D map has become a tab too.

Given this major changes, I finally wrote the project's instructions and notes.

Event: Music Contest
The music contest is now open! The goal is to make background music for Star Vault.
Please read the contest's instructions in this project.
And last but not least, have fun!

Update
I have finally added WASD and mobile controls to the 3D map. You can toggle mobile controls from the settings tab. The rest of the project is already mobile friendly.

The search engine is much more powerful than the one in the first version! That's why it is taking a long time. I am currently working on it and it will probably take another week (considering that I don't have that much time).

Update
The searching feature is finally complete! You can now search among star systems, stars and planets by their name, and you can narrow your search with constellation, object type and spectral class filters.
Click on an object's icon to open an information tab.

The red close button doesn't work yet. It will be the very next update. I'll consider it a minor update so I won't post about it.

Edit (29/03/2025): the close button now works.

Update
Now stars' names appear on the 3D map. You can toggle them in the settings tab. The corresponding checkbox has three modes instead of just two:
1. “none”: no label is shown next to a star
2. “selected”: a label is shown next to a star if you open an information tab for any object in that system
3. “all”: a label is shown next to each star

In my personal opinion this is a great addition and makes the 3D map look a lot better. I'd be glad to know your own opinion!

Milestone
Star Vault reaches 25 stars!
The last star added is Luyten's Star.

In this event, you choose an astronomical object (star, galaxy, planet, nebula, black hole, etc.) and make a presentation about it! For more details, please check this project.

Update (minor)
Labels of stars that concentrate at the center of the screen when you zoom out don't show even when labels are turned on. This basically removes the thick white bar made of all stars' names overlapping.
Solar System's label is only shown under 9 ly.
Moreover, labels doesn't get stuck at the edges anymore

Now objects also have a Notes attribute. This means you may find some extra facts!
If you participate in Meet A Star, you may write yourself these notes for the object you chose.

Milestone
Star Vault reaches 50 stars!
The last star added is Beta Carinae AKA Miaplacidus.

Update
I added a small button labeled “ALL” to the class filter in the search tab. It allows you to check / uncheck all checkboxes at once. It's easier to search for just one or two classes: you uncheck everything and then you select the classes you want, instead of unchecking the other 10 classes you don't care about!

Stars Eta Carinae and Pistol Star are currently hard to catalog in the current Star Vault version due to its inherent limits in how data is stored. They will however be available in a future version of Star Vault.
Except for these two stars, all other ones that were in the first version of Star Vault are now available, and in greater detail, in the newest version.
