Chapter One: Escape from NewHeights Hospital


The space is quiet. It always is. Whispers from other people assigned to your fate don’t travel through the padded walls, and no tales of the outside world ever make their way inside. You always thought NewHeights Hospital for the Unfit was a grand building, its spires poking holes through the fluffy clouds that were always perfectly positioned in the sky of Perfaith City–but now? When you’re on the inside, not as a warning, not for a tour, but as a prisoner? The walls feel tighter with each passing second.

You take the staircase up to the lounge–if you can call it that. It’s a large and unremarkable white room with no windows and uncomfortable plastic chairs. But the real intrigue of it all is the people—about twenty of them, sitting in various positions across the space, absentmindedly chatting with one another about the situation. Three people at the very back of the room stand out to you the most. You take a seat on the cold, concrete floor and turn to face them as the one in the middle clears his throat before addressing the group.
“Hello, everyone. As I’m sure you can tell, we’ve gotten ourselves into quite the… sticky situation. We’re working on a way to get out of here, but we’re going to need everyone’s help. Maybe some introductions to start us off? I’m Zy, and I currently have all the records of the rebellion.”
The girl on his right stands up, her brown hair pulled into a ponytail. “I’m Yume, and I ran the chemistry department during the revolution. If we’re serious about escaping, it’s going to take all of us to pull it off!”
Finally, the girl opposite her stands, a butterfly clip in her dark brown hair. “I’m Sarah, the strategist for the rebellion. I think we have an idea, but it’s too risky to discuss it here. Please meet us at midnight in the courtyard.”
The three of them sit back down as people slowly filter out of the room. It’s a long shot, but we might just make it.

“Here’s the deal.” Zy is sitting under a tree in the courtyard, Yume and Sarah sitting across from him. “We think that during the early phases of the revolution, a few of ours were able to successfully infiltrate the upper levels of security across the institutions in Perfaith. Hopefully, a few of them are working here. We need to ask around and see if we can figure out everyone’s numbers.”
Yume turns to the group. “Everyone who joined the security teams during this time has an ID number that ends in 284—people from the rebellion along with everyone else.”
“That’s why we need to be careful,” Sarah says. “Not everyone with a number ending in 284 is on our side. Our first order of business is getting everyone’s number so we can try to figure out who is on our side. Please make sure you don’t let them know we’re onto them.”

Welcome to your first puzzle. Six security guards walk the halls of floor seven from 8 AM to 8 PM at NewHeights Hospital. Five security guards run the night shift from 8 PM to 8 AM*. In order to find out their numbers, we need to talk to them—discreetly, of course. If they think we’re onto them, our chance of escape decreases dramatically. You must ask the security guards during their shift (though due to timezone differences across Scratch, their responses may not fall exactly during the allotted time).
