Hey! After recently modding my new 2ds xl I'm been thinking “Well I have an old Wii I don't use anymore!” so I've been thinking of modding it. I've been doing some research in the past couple days on wii.hacks.guide and the WiiBrew Wiki, and I think I have the knowledge to follow the tutorial and know what I'm doing, and fix bricks that don't require hardware modification.
My question is: Is modding a Wii worth it in 2025? Also, what size of SD should I get? I have a 64gb for my new 2ds xl but I figure I won't need that much space because the Wii is a bit older.
It's a lot of fun so if you're capable of doing it then go for it!

2GB is probably plenty if you don't intend to store any games on it. If you do then of course you would want a higher capacity one or, more likely, a USB hard drive or flash drive.

Probably 128 or 256gb if you have/want a lot of Wii games but 64gb if you just have the best ones. The biggest game you could backup is over 7gb alone so 128 is probably the best size.

To answer your questions:
1. Yes Wii modding is worth it in 2025. Homebrew is awesome and there are a ton of goodies.
2. Get at least a 64GB card if you want to comfortably hold anything you might put onto it.
Bonus: If your Wii lets you install BootMii as boot2 consider yourself lucky and your Wii nearly-immortal. You can recover from basically every brick but a low-level brick with that kind of protection.

Yeah, when it comes to bricks the low-level kind is particularly what I really don't want to happen, because it seems I would need hardware modification with Infectus? Oh well, I presume getting into that state on accident isn't something I need to worry about.

I have a family edition Wii, which doesn't have gamecube ports. Is that something that would make recovery more difficult?

Yes and no.
All I know is that you definitely won't be able to do a boot2 install on that model but it's alright. If you're careful then you'll be fine.

How often would that really be used in normal use and recovery from bricks though? In normal use how much should I worry about actually bricking my Wii?
sorry for the potentially dumb questions!

As I said as long as you don't do anything stupid you'd use it…
…never. It's just really really useful to have around in case something goes wrong. Priiloader should be able to save you if something goes wrong though (Priiloader can be installed on all Wiis)

Did you guys see the news about the HBC? It doesn't really seem that important since it wasn't under active development, but still.

Yeah, it's pretty sad alright but not much that can be done.
I'm not too surprised as it's from 2008. Of course they had to do that so they could get it running.

RIP Homebrew Channel
(OK, but why would anyone just steal SDK code like that?)

I highly doubt Nintendo even still cares about it, making the page read only serves no purpose.

Random Question: Does Scratch work with the Internet Channel?

The internet channel has not been updated since 2009, so, uh, yeah, probably not. I can test it if you wish!
