What is YOUR favorite operating system?

r/MildlyInfuriating My brother made a virtual machine to see Windows 7 again. It forced the machine to update to 10, just as it did to the other computers 6 years ago, when my Dad's computer crashed and had to change to Ubuntu, and when my Mom's computer became an unstable mess that's been taken to a computer store more times in a span of months than we had for all of them in years.

Any other newer operating systems you guys know of? Ubuntu is a little hard for my family to maneuver in, as not all of us are tech savvy.

The computer originally had XP on it, but it has too much attachment and too many memories to just let go.

Windows NT 4.0 and 2000 have some nice aesthetics. If I had a computer that supported them, I would be using them today.

Nowadays, I'm a big advocate for Linux because it's free, open-source, and developer-friendly. I like Debian for servers because it's stable and lightweight. For desktop, I haven't found anything perfect but I do like Kubuntu. I just wish Canonical would stop pushing Snap so hard.

By the way, I still think Windows 7 was a nice OS. But Windows took a turn for the worse afterwards. The fact that you need a Microsoft account to install Windows 11 is unacceptable. And after you install, Microsoft will constantly nag you to use OneDrive, Office, and Edge.

In terms of performance, it seems each version of Windows becomes more resource inefficient. On my laptop, Windows 11 eats up 4GB of RAM when idle. As the saying goes: what Andy giveth, Bill taketh away.

Yeah. I'm just having problems about OneDrive always appearing on my new laptop with W10. Even if i actually like using W10 with some programs and tweaking, yeah, it's really easy to see the hate about it when even with that I'm having annoyances like that, as well of being slow af with HDDs. W11 doesn't look any better either.

Curiously, I've been messing around with a Debian based distro called Q4OS that looks very similar to the older Windows, and i migh even switch to it as an introduction to Linux on my older computer when Windows 10's EOL happens.

Windows XP, without a doubt. I'd say I used XP more than Windows 10 in my entire life. For Linux, I'd go with Debian.
