Color/Ghost effect lag.

I've noticed that two of my test account's projects, that used to run well, now lag when I start it…

I believe the problem is about the Effects that are being used, but it wasn't like that last week… Could you please help, Scratch Team?

I've noticed that there seems to be lag in the Project Editor as well as Fullscreen in Viewer. Fullscreen might need to render more, and that's why it lags, but I'm pretty sure that shouldn't be a problem in Editor.

Hm, it always lagged in Fullscreen for me, but that never happened in the Editor…

The Colour and Ghost effects also create lag for me.

I think it also happens when we use the Brightness effect…

The larger the sprite when using an effect, the greater the lag. The effect can be seen in my Lag Test.

Because of this, I refuse to do any further work on my projects until the lag is gone.

My project has 480x360 powerful fading backgrounds and ghost effects all throughout it, and runs perfectly fine, with no sound interference. Woohoo IE!

Brightness change causes massive lag for me. I use Google Chrome on a Windows XP. This has been the case for my projects as well as some others. This is very annoying because I've been using this effect a lot. Projects that lag for me: http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/11319699/ and http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/11298206/

I agree. Over the last 4 days paper minecraft (and older versions thereof) have suddenly taken a real performance hit in chrome under windows. It has not taken a hit when running firefox as far as I can see. If I remove all ‘brightness’ effects then things run fine in Chrome also. I'd like to note that it appears to really begin lagging even with small sprites having this effect applied when 95% of the screen is not affected. This was not the case 4 days ago (or so). Best guess therefore is that this is related to a Chrome update? Psyborg has told me that swapping to adobes flash player instead of the built in chrome flash player improved things, but I haven't been able to confirm the same findings (but I could have done it wrong). Please please please can this be looked into?

Yes, from last Friday night, my project (and all previous versions) started lagging terribly in Chrome. After a bit of digging I found this: https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/108086 (can I post urls here?).

I found that by disabling the “pepper” version of flash player within Chrome, my project ran as quickly as ever.

Some of use are using other browsers. I'm using Chrome, but I have Pepperflash disabled, and I still experience said lag.

When I tried it out on Internet Explorer on a different computer, it worked perfectly fine without any lag. Now, that was on a different computer, but all of our computers have similar protection.

I'm checking on this computer with IE (Windows XP with Google Chrome normally).

Yup. It worked perfectly on this computer when I used IE instead of Chrome. Must be something about Chrome.

Well, this problem is global for me.
For both Firefox and Chrome, the effects lag terribly, especially Firefox.
And IE10 doesn't display any projects at all.

Color/Ghost effect lag.

This morning I rebooted my netbook (doesn't happen that often as I usually just hibernate it) and on restart was prompted for an Adobe Flash Player update. I installed the update but as soon as I tried my Catastrophy game (see sig) the title page started to lag terribly like I had experienced with the pepper plugin.

Therefore I am inferring that the lag has come through an update in the flash player which had previously installed automatically as Chrome auto updates the plug in. When I disabled the pepper plug in, I went back to an earlier version of flash and hence the lag went. Now I have updated that version of the flash player I am stuck with the lag again!

Next test will be to attempt to rollback flash…

Ok!!! I uninstalled flash player 11.8 and reinstalled Flash Player 11.7.700.224 (available here http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/archived-flash-player-versions.html) and my lag is gone again.

Looks like 11.8 was released around the 9th July which ties in with most of the complaints. I guess there is something in 11.8 that doesn't play nicely with Chrome in particular.

Confirmed. All my browsers with this Flash Version lag a lot.

Scratch Team, please look into this issue.
