Now a days, modern games INCLUDING new RPGs kind of forget about the story or making the characters interesting. But old RPGs? They did the best job with coming up with a story ever.
Well, first of all, the DS and Gamecube are two different “generations” of consoles. I kind of have to disagree with your statement though. Fire Emblem has only improved on 3DS, Bravely Default, Xenoblade, and Valkyria Chronicles are just some of the great RPGs that appear after the period that you said. I highly recommend all the games I listed. Also I feel that you think that there is a lack of good stories because everything's already been done, I get it, but not ALL are bland and boring. Anyway, keep your opinion, but don't restrict yourself from trying out some great RPGs.

I'm still sad that isometric RTS games went away. I really don't like full 3D for real time strategy for some reason. I guess it's because isometric tends to feel more polished at the expense of freedom and the limitation allows some degree of mystique to be preserved. In a full 3D game the camera can be rotate around to see everything and more often than not that includes ugly texturing, bad geometry, or just empty space.

Anyway, I love how old school games weren't always to violent as the ones now, like COD or GTA. Games back then had a sense of respect and didnnt have much of blood and gore until about the late 80s to early 90s even then titles such as “DOOM”, “Smash TV” and others weren't as bad as they are today. Plus, you actually have a set goal and a time limit, so your never bored.

The only reason games were less violent prior to Doom was because we literally didn't have the processing power to make them any other way. It's hard to make Pac-Man.

I was born in '86. Games are less violent than they were fifteen years ago. As a teenager I played Soldier of Fortune, Postal 2, Kingpin: Life of Crime, and many other extremely violent games.

Games these days are weirdly sanitised by comparison!

I tried to play GTA once, I have to say…I didn't enjoy what I played. It wasn't actually, like what you said, didn't have the same sence of respect as old videogames did. It was just more like a murderfest than a game…or in my eyes. I'm just not the kind of person why likes to see “realistic” videogames for some reason, let alone play them. They just feel….dull.
And yeah, old videogames were made with lots of respect back then. Since programmers didn't have the technology at the time to make good or realistic graphics. So, what did they do? They made good stories. I just don't believe new RPGs that are new entries in their series had anything good to work with. I've played the new Xenoblade game recently and I didn't really like it. Heck, the new Fire Emblem game didn't appeal to me, either. I don't know why, but they don't X3
(I do have to award Undertale, though. The creator did decide to not be the kind of programmer that just focuses mainly on graphics. It kind of reminded me more about what made older RPGs good: not heavily focusing on making realistic graphics and instead making a detailed enviorment while focusing on making the characters relatable and interesting and making the story mysterious and pretty deep.)

Oh and RIP Banjo-Kazooie series. There is no way to revive it now. It's broken ;-;
Hey, at least I still have my N64! I can play the first one again Yeah…after Banjo-Kazooie Nuts and Bolts the series died =T

Okay, I'm going to have to point this fairly major thing out:
Survivorship bias

Basically:
You're around to see today's games as they come out. You see some good, a lot bad.
That isn't a new thing. The amount of utter rubbish that was released back then was staggering. There were a few good things that stood out in people's memories.

If we look back we see only the best and the extreme failures (such as E.T.). All the stuff that was “only okay” gets forgotten - and that stuff makes up most of the games released.

It's the same principle behind “They don't make things like they used to!” - all the old things that were badly made broke long ago and so aren't around. Only the small number of things that were well built survived!

Oh and generally speaking stories back then were pretty much written by programmers rather than writers. As a result there was the occasional fluke that was good and mostly lots of utterly cringe-inducing clichéd rubbish. Ah, memories…

One thing I will agree with you on - there's has been a move away from in-depth RPGs. The two main reasons are kinda interesting.
  1. Complexity - To make a modern game that can compete with other modern games takes a lot of time, resources, and money. Adding a new character isn't just inserting a sprite and adding some more text to a dialogue file any more.
  2. Market - the expectations of players have changed. The market is bigger than ever but a large percentage of gamers are older and no longer have the time to devote to games that are hundreds of hours long. There's not much demand for big games to be that long any more and so publishers aren't interested in paying developers to make them.

Fallout 2 is still my favourite CRPG of all time and I've not found anything that even comes close. Fallout 3 and onwards aren't the same kind of game at all. They're not bad games but they've not got the depth the first two had.

“Respect” has nothing to do with it.
