On the situation about Scratch 4.0

I heard you guys are all obsessed with Scratch 4.0 and I think we shouldn't be. At least for now. I bet the Scratch Team only makes Scratch versions whenever there is a new technology that they can use to replace the previous one. So, can we release Scratch 4 when there's a new technology that's important to us?

Yes. The time gap is a coincidence.

With Scratch 2.0, I'm thinking that the Scratch Team was experimenting with Flash. With Scratch 3.0 however, it was developed because Adobe (in ~2017) announced that Flash would be shutting down in 2020/2021. Scratch 3.0 is developed in JavaScript (and probably WebGL) so I'm pretty sure Scratch 4.0 will most likely be the same.

I'm pretty sure it's when JavaScript gets cooked.

JavaScript has been around for over 28 years (December 1995) so I doubt it's going to become obsolete in the future. Most websites (over 99%) use JavaScript for stuff like interactive games all the way to minor purposes like getting the date and time.

Scratch uses WebGL to render graphics on stages, because not all modern browsers yet automatically use hardware acceleration with the Canvas API (and Scratch is laggy enough anyways)

And no, JavaScript is far too intertwined with the internet itself to become obsolete in the near future (or even several years down the road). If something does take its place, browsers will have no choice but to continue to support JavaScript until very few websites use it, at which point they could stop supporting it. ECMA (the organization who writes the JavaScript standards) currently has no plans (at least publicly) to discontinue it.

The ST worked on 3.0 in 2016, a year before Adobe announced the EOL. They just wanted to use JavaScript.

When that happens all of our great grandchildren will be deep in the ground and the earth a toxic wasteland of nuclear fallout.

…source? I have NEVER heard anyone say this. I don't think ST has ever announced they're planning on making Scratch 4.

There have been some topics in this forum and some comments around the website about “Scratch 4.0 is coming out soon! Get ready!” or that kind of thing. One of those topics was closed by @Paddle2See, saying that he had not heard of any plans for a Scratch 4.0 and it was highly unlikely there would be one anytime soon.

“When is 4.0 coming out??”/“Is 4.0 coming out???” is one of the more common questions I've seen asked in this forum.

Scratch 4.0 has been leaked! However, it may not come out until late 2025 or early 2026.

No, it hasn’t. Please don’t necropost.

It has been leaked (through a PDF on the Jobs page that we're not allowed to link because it encourages sharing personal contact information) that the Scratch Team will start development on 4.0 in 2025. However, some Scratch Team members have also said that while it will likely be a big enough update to have a major version change, it might also just be a really big update to 3.0.

Also, in case you hadn't noticed @CuteRobot22, it is 2025.
