Scratch 4.0

The project has now returned, but the link to the PDF file has been removed. Apparently linking to that is not allowed because it also contains contact information. As cheddargirl explained it:

Just because contact info is public in [the file] doesn't mean it's okay to post a link to that public info elsewhere. It's kind of like how people-finder repositories have contact info that's easily searchable and public, but it's not okay to post a link to that info elsewhere on the internet.
She has also said all links to that PDF file anywhere on Scratch will be removed. So if anyone asks about 4.0, just a link to the project which contains a screenshot is all that can be used.

Can you link to where she says that?

I don't know if anyone else feels this way, but I think this is completely unreasonable. If they're going to ban content from their own website, they shouldn't post that content on their website. I get that they have to put jobs somewhere, but then they should allow linking them on Scratch. What's on this PDF that's so bad anyway?

Yeah, I got my forum signature edited because it linked to it.

I don't know if they'll allow this (primarily for copyright reasons, actually- I'm in a grey area here), but I made a version that removes all of the links from it (and as a result does not give away any private/personal information), and is rendered as HTML (after being compiled from markdown) at https://bignate469.github.io/random-stuff/safe-for-scratch-version

Some interesting cheddargirl quotes on the matter:

cheddargirl wrote:

it's just an anticipated number change due to potential scope of project. In other words, we think it may be huge that could push it into 4.0 territory, but it's nothing official until actual work gets underway that would allow us to determine if the work is a scope of a 4.0 project or a 3.0 feature.

cheddargirl wrote:

It's not really official 4.0 work at this point. It's just an anticipated number change due to potential scope of project. But if ends up being a new feature built on top of 3.0 and not a huge change to 3.0 entirely, then it's still part of the 3.0 family.

cheddargirl wrote:

that job listing isn't verifiable proof of any official work on 4.0. The number listing from 3.0 to 4.0 is still dependent on how much or how little the current 3.0 software needs to be modified, and for all anyone knows, we could still be stuck with 3.0 when the new features are added regardless of the job listing.

cheddargirl wrote:

just asking the ST every once in a while in Questions About Scratch about 4.0 status [is okay]

It’s possible they’d go more on the social side, adding rejected suggestions such as live message, typing indicator and online indicators.

I kinda suspected this for some reasons I can’t share, but there was lots of buildup, at least from my point of view on certain things that I’m involved in.
Seems the fourms already recived a major upgrade with the 3.0 blocks too

They're still running on scratchr2.

The forums have been running on the same infrastructure for 11 years, and judging by what some ST members have said, it's not particularly sustainable. 3.0 blocks is mostly cosmetic; you could do it by just changing the SVGs rendered by [scratchblocks]. To my knowledge it doesn't require any backend changes.

3.0 blocks were a super minor update, just swapping out a couple files. i did some much bigger updates over the summer to clean up the codebase, and fix vulnerabilities, but the forums are more akin to being on life support than receiving updates. this whole topic is all just speculation based on one sentence in a job listing (which tend to be intentionally broad and vague).

“reimagined online community” almost certainly does not refer to the forums. and no, the scratch team is almost certainly not going to add “rejected suggestions”. i don’t think this speculation is helpful or even healthy..

I agree; I regret making this topic and I think it has run its course now.
