Scratch 4.0
(#40)It's also possible they don't want it shared with the larger Scratch community. Obviously they're not taking down content here, but this is a much smaller community than the wider Scratch community that most people never see, and they know it will never be erased from here. Just an idea. What happened to the linked project? It's been removed:For project Scratch 4.0 Announced!:
Please don't share or ask for private information (including school name, last names, phone numbers, passwords, email addresses, hometown or address, and usernames or links to any social media accounts) anywhere on Scratch. When you share information like this, it is visible to everyone on the internet. This is a serious safety issue, so please be careful about what you share, and follow the Community Guidelines when using Scratch.
I'm not sure if it's a mistake or if the job board counts as private information. I wrote to Contact Us to ask why and I guess we'll wait.

That'd be my second guess, though the message is a bit confusing (albeit a cookie-cutter one). I have seen projects removed with that message then put back up later though, so it's possible it might come back. No guarantees though. Don't really know how to feel. In nearly 14 years on this site it is my first time having a project removed by the ST, and it was my most-viewed project too. I wrote to Contact Us and I guess we'll just have to wait. Maybe it will come back or maybe not.
All of the project's 39 remixes are still up, so if the ST were trying to have people not talk about 4.0 they probably would have removed those as well. I am hoping it was a mistake and I will be able to reshare the project, though no guarantees. We will just see.

(#42)I do know that they remove things sometimes from the main site that are okay on the forums. For example, I know someone who shared an interactive project with Scratch's 2020 tax returns, which got taken down, but we're allowed to talk about that on the forums. It's also possible they don't want it shared with the larger Scratch community.

EDIT: How popular was the project? 39 remixes?

…and a major upgrade seems unnecessary in my opinion (especially since Scratch 3 still lacks features present in Scratch 2)This needs to be remembered. I'm also surprised since up to this point IIRC we've just been hearing Scratch 3 is gonna be the last major version for a long while/indefinitely and just receive continuous updates. But I won't be surprised if they also take the opportunity to add back some missing Scratch 2 stuff

I'm reasonably sure it was meant to be top-secret, they wouldn't have mentioned it somewhere public like a job description, even if apparently they aren't far enough yet for a front-page or press announcement.

It was removed due to other content that was in violation of the Community Guidelines. It's up to the project owner if they wish to dispute the notification or remove the violating content from the project before resharing the project. Please follow the Community Guidelines and don't gossip or spread misinformation.
I'm not really sure what other content she is referring to here. All that was in the project was:
- a link to scratch.mit.edu/jobs
- a screenshot of the job listing page with the text “developing the new Scratch 4.0” highlighted
- the same text “developing the new Scratch 4.0” below in larger font
- the song “The Only Thing They Fear Is You” on loop (it's an instrumental and has no words, so can't be inappropriate)
I had thought maybe it was removed either because it was meant to be secret, or the flame wars that people were starting in the comments section. But to be honest, I'm even more confused now. I have no idea what part of the project is the “violating content”. I am hoping that either Contact Us or cheddargirl will say what is wrong with it soon, because I genuinely have no idea. Of course I would never intentionally post anything that goes against the Community Guidelines. But I don't even know what part they want me to remove.

also will they finally add Lets Chance?

They've actually been somewhat open to custom reporters for a very long time. Not to say that's the only reason it should be added. Rejected is sorta the opposite of being considered.(#45)By this logic they should also add real time collabs, which is rejected

I have a theory:
The “re-imagined online community” could be a version of the website, but with some limitations, like getting rid of the explore button. From what I know, they have been receiving lots of criticism from the community, specifically about the explore page and inappropriate accounts, and they also opened up a new program for interacting with it's user's criticism.

The scratch foundation had an $8m loss in 2023, which is shown on their tax returns for that year. Look up “scratch foundation propublica” to find them.(#44)Offtopic: What was Scratch's 2020 tax returns?

They could add TurboWarp extensions to basic Scratch, and give the forums a modern look.I don't agree on the first one, but the second may very well be true. The forums are certainly outdated, and that change could be part of the “revamped online community” thing

They could add TurboWarp extensions to basic Scratch, and give the forums a modern look. All of those are community-maintained; Scratch likely won't add them as a result (it would be too easy to make inappropriate extensions, or break them at any time).
Also, people seem to think “make Scratch more like TurboWarp” is always a good thing. While it is true that TurboWarp has many useful features, it is a Scratch mod, and not all of those features actually need to be implemented for Scratch to meet its goals of letting kids “Imagine, Program, Share”.
and give the forums a modern look. They're already working on that. It will likely be a 3.0 update, not a 4.0 feature.

I have a theory:That would severely inhibit the “Share” part of the motto- while the way projects are ranked on the Explore page is certainly broken, part of the issue is social, not related to the ST's programs or moderation. It's not the ST's fault that platformers are often marked “animations” and “music” even when that's not their main focus.
The “re-imagined online community” could be a version of the website, but with some limitations, like getting rid of the explore button. From what I know, they have been receiving lots of criticism from the community, specifically about the explore page and inappropriate accounts, and they also opened up a new program for interacting with it's user's criticism.
Inappropriate accounts need to be reported. The ST doesn't have the time or resources to look at every comment, project, studio or account every day to make sure that they're not inappropriate. They rely on the report button being used so that a human moderator can look at what was reported and punish people accordingly.
