Someone's made something that could help our research and defeat the evil kumquats! Check the signature of the king of the page. Meanwhile, I've made a discovery that could change the way we do research.

You see, there's one thing the evil and good kumquats don't have in common - the evil ones have seeds, which is what they have to use to reproduce, and the good ones don't have seeds because the seeds are what drive the kumquats to eat signatures. But if they have no seeds, they can't reproduce and the kumquats will disappear. We don't want that, because they're an important part of the signature ecosystem and everyone's signatures will fall into anarchy if they disappear.

But there's one big thing to help this problem that I know about kumquats - they only eat signatures once, then they reproduce. So the seeds are good when they've come from a kumquat who's already eaten a signature. However, I don't know this for certain. I'm going off of a wide array of academic kumquat studies and my own research, and haven't tested it on a real signature yet. So those tests are underway, and the lab are currently trying to get back to me.

Maybe that's why the good kumquats are disappearing. It's just that they are unable to reproduce.

Through testing through all parts of Scratch, we have discovered that a gene triggers whether the adult kumquats eat signatures (the so-called “evil” kumquats) or don't eat signatures (the so-called “good” kumquats). We have also discovered that the good kumquats are born with seeds and most of the the evil kumquats are not. However, adult good kumquats have no seeds and the evil kumquats have tons of seeds inside their bodies, and an increasing amount of evil kumquats are born with seeds. There are currently two theories that explain why adult good kumquats don't have seeds:

  1. The good kumquats transfer their seeds to the evil kumquats during the kumquats' transition to adulthood in a process similar to internal fertilization. After the seed is transferred from a good kumquat to an evil kumquat, the seed slowly develops into a juvenile. Thus, evil kumquats only “eat” signatures to feed their young when they are inside of their bodies. If this theory is confirmed to be true, then the kumquats still use some form of photosynthesis to gain their energy, which was thought to be lost in the evolutionary transition to the kumquats we see on Scratch, and the evil kumquats are evolving to be born with seeds so that they are able to reproduce in adulthood without any good kumquats. So, in a way, the evil kumquats are not necessarily “evil,” but are rather eating signatures to feed their young while they are developing and do not have a malicious intent. However, this theory is less likely to be true as photosynthesis does not produce enough energy in organisms that are capable of independent movement.
  2. Juvenile evil kumquats feed on the good kumquats' seeds as their main source of food. After adulthood, the evil kumquats switch to eating signatures while the good kumquats use photosynthesis like their juvenile forms. Due to the decline in the number of good kumquats, however, evil kumquats have evolved to be born with seeds so they can feed on them, like the yolk sacks in very young salmon. Natural selection seems to favor the evil kumquats and their signaturevorous behavior as photosynthesis does not produce enough energy in organisms that are capable of independent movement.

Okay, this all seems to line up with my previous studies where I discovered that good kumquats had seeds - before placing them in a room unsupervised with evil kumquats, which was the actual study but after the study and removing the evil kumquats I discovered they no longer had seeds, so I believe that theory 2 is the most true. But if theory 2 is true, then I have a discovery - based on the first study that revealed that there are also good kumquats in addition to evil kumquats, where we also discovered that the reproduction system for good kumquats is different to the ones for evil kumquats, then we can help the good kumquats reproduce if we can breed a new species of good kumquats with splitusin, the chemical that separates a post from the signature, and is what the signature grows off of. Signatures contain traces of splitusin and that strengthens the seeds, making them harder to be dislodged until the seed dislodges itself.

We know this from the study of the Rutaceae breed which was when we discovered the three breeds of kumquats, although two of the breeds are practically extinct now due to the fact that they could only reproduce with kumquats of another breed to make a kumquat whose breed is neither of the parents' breed (A and B are bred to make C, for example) which made it hard to reproduce. Now, splitusin helps strengthen the bond between the seed and its parent kumquat, but the seeds of good kumquats are lacking in splitusin (this is a case of educated guessing, we are yet to study the two different kinds of kumquats' seeds for splitusin) due to not eating signatures. This is what makes it easier for evil kumquats to eat good kumquats' seeds, but good kumquats can't eat evil kumquats' seeds.

Now, we have to fix this by placing splitusin into the diet of a good kumquat. We'll need to enlist KitKat341b and his Kumquat Rehab Center to place splitusin into the diet of all kumquats, instead of just evil kumquats. In order to do this, we'll first need to farm splitusin. We can take the seed of an evil kumquat and grab its splitusin, which we can then water with the acids that a kumquat has in it, which will cause the splitusin to expand. But not too much, because that will contaminate them. We'll first need an evil kumquat, but how do we get one?

We can use it in our next study comparing the evil kumquats and the good kumquats.

Good idea. It's an evil kumquat, by the looks of things, and I have a couple good kumquats at hand at all times. So we can compare them easily. We can check the seeds (I managed to capture a good kumquat before its seeds could be eaten) of both for more info on the points I made earlier (post #85), but we do have a lot of other unanswered questions, such as if they're the same species.

I tried to teach an evil kumquat how to cook once, but he failed the cooking test. Then, he suddenly cooked a siggy-wich and told me to try it. /j

So, it turns out that evil kumquats can naturally cook things without even knowing how to. Maybe they “eat” signatures because they use them to cook their food and help them reproduce. Maybe if we can get an evil kumquat and a good kumquat can be friends, the evil kumquat will cook stuff and the good kumquat will eat whatever the evil kumquat cooks, adding splitosin to the good kumquat's diet. Then, if we breed that good kumquat with another good kumquat, the children will bond with the evil kumquats which then give the good kumquats splitosin. Over time, the good kumquats will naturally evolve how to cook things the same way the evil kumquats cook things to gain splitosin in their diet. The problem with that is that the good kumquats will start “eating” signatures after enough time has passed.

We were almost there! Wait, hold on. You know how lgbjuraj got that evil kumquat? It'll have pierced the splitusin by that point, so it might have some inside its' seed. We need to get that kumquat before it reproduces, and fast. We could then contact KitKat341b and his Kumquat Rehab Center to insert splitusin into the diet of a good kumquat, and if we can create a meal that includes splitusin, the good kumquats will have it in their diets!

Oh, also - the lab's told me that a kumquat actually needs to have a sufficient supply of fresh air to reproduce. So that kumquat won't reproduce yet.

Kumquats are believed to be signature-eating beasts who patrol the forums to eat all signatures they can. The reason they eat signatures is because they find it's the best way to fulfill their hunger while mostly staying in one place. Although not all Kumquats will eat signatures, the army which patrols the forums and eats signatures is labelled as the Evil Kumquats. Some Kumquats have even formed groups to stop the Evil Kumquats to stop the hate against all Kumquats.
Here, Scratchers can gather to make scientific theories, hypotheses, and tests in order to figure out something that will truly get rid of all Evil Kumquats. However, Evil Kumquats are not like normal Kumquats. Evil Kumquats have developed themselves to have much less weaknesses opposed to regular Kumquats, their true weaknesses being unknown. This means knives will not harm an Evil Kumquat. We need to find and create ways to defeat Evil Kumquats once and for all.

I feel like this is a necropost, but let's intentionally make random signatures and divert the evil kumquats from the serious signatures using these. In case you're wondering, we'd use alts to accomplish this. I have a bunch.
