Does Fedora kill upgrading? Weird.I use Fedora Linux 38 dailyYou should probably update to 40. Once 41 comes out, upgrading from 38 isn't going to be supported anymore.

Could we do “version leaps”? (from 38 to 40 to 41 when it's released) That's why I did back when I only have my Ubuntu 16 CD.I use Fedora Linux 38 dailyYou should probably update to 40. Once 41 comes out, upgrading from 38 isn't going to be supported anymore.
(note: it failed miserably)

From a quick Google search, it looks like you can do that (in the case of 37 to 40 at least, which should be similar to upgrading to 41 from 38).Could we do “version leaps”? (from 38 to 40 to 41 when it's released) That's why I did back when I only have my Ubuntu 16 CD.I use Fedora Linux 38 dailyYou should probably update to 40. (#225)Fedora GNOME or Ubuntu will be good as they install non-free firmware out-of-the-box (Which is necessary depending on the laptop).

Turns out it's so stingy with patent-encumbered things that the H.264 codec it uses is flawed and I had to use another repo to get a better one

See RPM Fusion and how to include it in your repository list (or whatever it's called in Fedora). I don't know why they didn't include x264 in their official repo, considering that x264 is licensed with GPLv2 and are in the rpmfusion-free repo. Instead we had this libopenh264 thing made on behalf of…Cisco, for some reason. Maybe Fedora/RH had beef with x264 before? I don't know.

i was running linux mint for a long while until my computer finally gave in and refused to turn on. through some investigations, the motherboard was completely dead and no power was going through. six years is a long time to be actively running that thing. i don’t want to give up my daily driver and yet no one is selling replacement motherboards. so i guess christmas time is the next chance I will get to run linux as a daily OS again.

i was running linux mint for a long while until my computer finally gave in and refused to turn on. through some investigations, the motherboard was completely dead and no power was going through. six years is a long time to be actively running that thing. i don’t want to give up my daily driver and yet no one is selling replacement motherboards. so i guess christmas time is the next chance I will get to run linux as a daily OS again.And I have a 10-year-old iPad mini that still runs perfectly fine
This is why you regularly restart your computer.
At least you can replace your motherboard- the only devices I have either can't really be repaired (iPads), are hard to repair (Windows laptop- just because the electronics inside are packed tightly), or are the motherboard itself (Raspberry Pi 5).

[This is why you regularly restart your computer.i do restart my computer on a regular basis.
i should have noted this before but just before the laptop (this was a laptop) died i had opened the back case to replace the headphone jack using a spare one i had laying around. the battery was unplugged and i did discharge the computer. i managed to solder in the new one i had nicely put in. but as soon as i put the battery back in, plugged the laptop in, and was about to screw the case closed, it refused to boot at all? something probably caused a massive short on the board, probably around where the charger cable was (it’s a 19.5v charger) because i did hear a spark somewhere. you can probably take a few guesses on what went wrong
