Is giving book recommendations that are for young adults (typically 12-18) allowed on Scratch?

Hi! Recently somebody shared a project that shared book recommendations that are for Young Adults.
Btw PC means project creator in this context. Also the age ratings are from the PC.

One of these projects is labelled YA while another is YA and middle grade. Here's the YA one's book recommendations:

1. City Spies (10+)
2. Red Queen (13+)
3. Girl Forgotten (13+)
4. House Of Salt And Sorrows (14+)
5. Rebel of the Sands (14+)

Should I report this project? It contains summaries of the books too (summaries are from google tho)

Its hard to tell since its really up to the viewers wether they want to, it also depends on their exposure to the themes in the book. In short, its most likelky not reportable

That's a good point.

Hmm, im not sure about how much exposure there is in the books.

But apparently , according to ST, you're not allowed to advertise real-world products on Scratch. I made a backtoschool projewct but that was so i could show off my shopping, not advertise it. Would that apply to this one too, for wanting to help out users with finding books?

When they say “Advertising real-world products is not allowed,” that usually means “Asking others to purchase a product you or a friend made is not allowed” … or “Trying to sell things on Scratch is not allowed.” There is a clear difference between recommending a book versus asking someone to purchase a book you made. Recommending books should be fine, of course as long as the book is appropriate.

Hard to say, some books can be very inappropriate but yet appropriate for 14 year olds. Officially, probably not, as all books mentioned should be appropriate for 8+. However in practice this obviously doesn’t make any sense, so I’m guessing it’s probably fine.

Except I do not know what books they are or what's inside them. I do not particularly like the idea of books that contain .. weird aspects that are inappropriate. I don't want to be scarred for life after reading those books, even if they are in my age group.

Why would you recommend a book you have not read?

what if i made a sold game, but don't even imply i made it, because I want to talk to people about it without asking them to buy or anything, kinda like every video game topic on tirap

That's probably fine, since you're not recommending real-world products, more like discussing a real-world thing, hence why projects about Harry Potter, Lord Of The Rings, Warrior Cats, etc. are allowed.

Yes, that's what I thought too! But why should it be difficult in practice? I think if that rule was enforced, all projects that contained, say, screenshots of Harry Potter's 8th movie, would be removed, since the 8th HP movie is 12+. But the series itself is generally considered all ages. I've often heard that you can refer to things that are like 13+ as long as you don't mention the aspects that make the said thing 13+, but I'm not sure if that rule actually applies.

Understandable. But I've read other topics where people have deemed 18+ franchises to be unmentionable on Scratch.

I believe it typically does; There are only a few franchises that have a ban on them.

Some franchises, that is. (Such as Silly Hotel or Silly Boss. Those are not the names, but I prefer not to refer to them with their real names since I am not sure if you can name those franchises either.)

According to the Scratch Community Guidelines, the content should be suitable for all ages. However, the guidelines also mention that Scratch is a community for people of all ages, and it's okay to share things that excite you and are important to you.

In this case, the book recommendations are for young adults (12-18), and the age ratings are provided by the project creator. The summaries are from Google, which suggests that they are not explicit or graphic.

Considering these factors, it's likely that the project is allowed on Scratch. However, if you're still unsure, you can use your best judgment and consider the following:

Are the book summaries explicit or graphic?
Do the book recommendations promote or glorify violence, hate, or other negative themes?
Are the book recommendations respectful and suitable for a community of all ages?
If you've reviewed the project and don't think it violates the Community Guidelines, you might not need to report it. However, if you're still unsure, you can always report the project and let the Scratch Team review it.

It's also worth noting that the Scratch Team encourages users to use their best judgment when creating and sharing content. If you're unsure about a project, you can always ask the project creator for more information or context before reporting it.

well no but the forums are for humans, because if you didn't want to talk to humans you would just go to the ai website

also dang that's crazy I would at least have said it's ai instead of just posting it like that
