Scratch should remove follows
I fully retract my statement. Sometimes your opinion will change over time.
follower counts are something i have wanted to be removed for a good while. there are so many people out there wishing for their dream of popularity to come true, when in reality, the follow feature mostly just exists to see what’s up with a scratcher’s projects you happen to enjoy.
understandably, once people find out that a feature like this is removed, there would be lots of outrage. which is not a bad thing to be upset about; follower counts are a pretty big identity to scratch itself. but the problem is that the follow counter is usually just a way of saying “this guy is either pretty popular or just created their account”, and people take the count way too seriously which basically encourages people to make projects solely for attention.
edit: i still stand by my post but i do want to clarify that after reading the other posts here that popularity is not a bad thing in scratch. i just think it’s too much of a focus especially with the existence of follower counts.

Follower counts for some people are a positive force to incentivize to keep making and learning things, and for some people follower counts detract from creativity in favor of popularity contests. The argument lies in whether the good outweighs the bad, which I believe it does - therefore, no support, and I do not think Scratch Team will seriously consider removing follower counts, but I do see where support could come from.

I always see these and I never understand why. People like to know how many followers they have, and it does matter how popular you are. Contrary to popular belief, Scratch IS about fame regardless of if it was meant to be.
The only way that makes sense to remove this would be to remove all social actions based on fame (as per this same reasoning). Everything comes back to who was the most comments, views, loves, faves, followers, projects, studios, etc. So the only way to fix all of this is to remove all social aspects of Scratch which has already been suggested.
So, IMO, we should stay away from radical suggestions that will really only succeed in making people angry (because let's face it - some people only code for fame). I think that Scratch projects would drastically decrease because I would argue that most people would have no motivation to make good, polished projects if people viewing them doesn't affect them.

Contrary to popular belief, Scratch IS about fame regardless of if it was meant to be.A better idea is to try to minimize the impact of having low follower counts. E.G. making it easier for ppl to find new scratchers.

Follower count could help you find who appeals most to the community. I do not think we should remove it.

What if I want to know? Just because I don't need to know something doesn't mean I shouldn't know it. I don't need to know the Sonic, Mega Man, or Kingdom Hearts lore, but I still do.why would you need to know that?nobody should be aware of how many follows they haveWhy? What if I want to know how many people follow me?
What if I just want to see how many people like my projects? What I need a motivation boost, and seeing that follower count helps?

I agreeSW1 was 2.0 to 3.0, SW2 was studio update, SW3 was color, SW4 was ai.What does that mean?SW1 (Scratch War 1); Color accessibility changes
you mean SW3, SW1 was studio update
I support because the more followers you have the more followers you want. Popular scratchers have overly encourage follow grinding. But followers in their current form are not effective in anyway. They signify status and skill where it doesn't exist. We should have a non public follower count.

A possible solution would be making it so a user can still follow people but not know when someone follows them. thoughts?Following is for keeping tabs on a Scratcher that you may like. For example, I follow Za-Chary because I think he has good taste, or his projects are good so I can find when he shares them. Following helps people find new projects that they may like based on interests, and be notified when someone you like shares a new project you may like.
This is a great explanation of why we have follows. Even if we get rid of follows and use a different system, it would serve the same function.
I'm happy to keep this open for more discussion, but please report to be closed if the conversation becomes unconstructive.

nobody should be aware of how many follows they haveDude, that's like the motivation for a ton of my projects.
How would you feel if you were possibly making a big project for no one?
Or, if that's not enough, what about 50 follower contests or 100 or 200 or so on??? whats the point of that if they remove the follower count?
NO SUPPORT
PS…You know you could just block it on your own with ad block on your brows3r

Instead of removing a stat that shouldn't be hidden from public viewers of a particular fanbase, why not add in the option to turn the follower count on or off? That could save a lot of time for them to make a simple toggle for it since removing the count will only create negative views of the stat for profiles, and then they won't have to worry about it. Options like these should really come into fruitation, once you've considered it.
Removal is never the solution in some situations. Why remove a harmless thing that shouldn't be taken so seriously, when you have the solution that I just put out in front of you?
Ding ding, your order is served, ladies and gentlemen.

No support, I honestly think people wouldn't be willing to count their followers one by one.

Scratch should remove follows
A possible solution would be making it so a user can still follow people but not know when someone follows them.My thoughts on something like this is that I think this would actually prove to stand out as a good solution for this kind of suggestion.
It's kind of like how some social medias handle a request to remove a follower that you want to remove, but it tells you that it won't let the user know whether they were unfollowed or followed.
