I am actually the original author of that joke. I intended it mainly as a small throwaway joke, but a lot of people kept running with it for other April Fools' content. My original intention was for the Scratch Team article to say that the Scratch Team was a group of evil kittens, solely so I could make a joke that there were complaints about the lack of diversity due to them all being cats. The energy units thing was just so I could give a bit more substance to the page and make it more than just one quick joke.
