Why is Antarctica a selectable country?

Who would live in Antarctica? I've seen 35% of the American scratch community chose that as their home country.

because if somebody lived in antarctica and saw that they couldn't select their home country, what are they to do

Well Antarctica is restricted to scientific research, and no one can travel there on vacation, even if a kid lived (or even born) there, they may as well go with the home country where their parents came from if Antarctica wasn't an option.

It's true, there are people who live in Antarctica for part of the year. I am pretty sure there is an American town with about 1,000 people that has people for half a year. People could also want to mask their location, and Antarctica is a good way to do that.

I do remember, but the China option is kind of outdated since Scratch was banned in China back in 2020, no need to change it however, like you said, anyone can use Scratch, even if they select a country they're not from.

Antarctica is a selectable country since it's in the ISO 3166 - the location standarization list that Scratch uses. [1]

It's for people that wouldn't like to share their home country and wouldn't like to put in a different country in case someone mistakes them for living in that country.

There can be many reasons why you wouldn't want to share your home country.
