It wouldn't work for that. Captions for audio is a different suggestion.
Can we add a block that just adds a caption?
yes please.

Maybe a randomised colour and font would be chosen for each sprite?
Like, if there was an animation, and there were three sprites that talk: A, B and C. The subtitles of each character could show up with different fonts.
A: I can't believe we've arrived!
B: I know, right? It's fantastic! So beau-
C: -tiful! It's perfect! And so sunny too. I love going to this beach
B: You read my mind, C. It's giiiiiving *does silly voice* superpowers
*A and C laugh*

Like in the laughing part, it's pink and blue because A and C laugh at the same time.

For things like *both laugh*, perhaps sounds could be read too, like if there was a sound after the speaking that was called ‘A & C laugh’, it would show up in subtitles as ‘*A and C laugh*’, because sounds would have asterisks on either side to separate them from regular speech.

Edit: The different fonts and colours might be a bit overstimulating, especially if there are lots of speaking sprites. Maybe the user viewing the project can choose if there are differences in font and colour based on sprite. Additionally, the user making the project could also change some subtitles, in case they changed the text to speech for sound change. For instance, they wrote ‘red’ instead of ‘read’ so that the word ‘read’ could be pronounced the way it would in past tense. But the word ‘red’ wouldn't make sense in subtitles.

One project:

Love the idea! I believe that having the whole text coloured would be unnecessary and, like you said, overstimulating. A better idea would be to only make the names coloured.

How? If you mean by using white text, firstly the whole sprite name would be a colour, not multiple colours for each letters, and also, the colour is randomly generated and do you think they'd let the sprite name be in an unreadable colour?

You can use other features for this or text to speech itself, and the text could just not display in the subtitles if there's a detected swear (text to speech doesn't say the text at all if there's a swear currently)

That could work, but I'm worried people might not bother to add the captions, which I believe was one of the concerns for the “workaround” for the text-to-speech subtitles.

I feel like the colors could be hard to tell apart or see for some (like when there's a light color on white), and the randomized colors could be very similar.

set [subtitles] to [*your word here*]

You can put that in the bottom of the screen and then make it a large one

This requires the project author to add code - if this suggestion were to be implemented, they'd be automatic.
