Why are both Scratch and Scratch Jr. for kids?

Why are both Scratch and Scratch Jr. for kids? After all, there only needs to be one kids site.

Because it doesn't really make sense to say that Scratch Jr. is for adults.

No there doesn't.

I know, but shouldn't Scratch Jr. be the one for kids? Then Scratch be the one for 13+? (Not that I am suggesting that, I know it's rejected)

Why are both Scratch and Scratch Jr. for kids?

Here's my take: They are both for kids because they are simpler programming languages, but it's important to note that they are targeted towards different audiences and purposes (which does not make them fall under 1 site).

Scratch Jr. is targeted towards kids 5-7, and features a more horizontal interface with a simpler, more kid (and touchscreen friendly) interface. It is designed as a kid's entry into programming.

Scratch is targeted towards kids 8+, and while it may seem very similar, it is slightly more complicated and unlike ScratchJr, can more easily be used to make more sophisticated projects.

Why are both Scratch and Scratch Jr. for kids?

the minds of 5-7 year olds differ greatly from those of 8-16 year olds

Why are both Scratch and Scratch Jr. for kids?

They're both for kids- it's just that ScrachJr is for young kids. It's not turning-complete, has no variables of any kind, no text inputs. It also has a coding interface that uses images to describe functions, rather than words. Also, most of the entire “control” category is missing- no if-statements, forever loops, etc.

Scratch is designed for people 8-16, and if you're older than 16, I will add, it may be easier (and more useful to you) to go learn Python or JavaScript.

It's because both scratch and scratch Jr. are simple at best, and perplexing at best too.

Look, if scratch is going to create a C++ version of it's own coding, then scratch and scratch Jr. are simple.

It isn’t for adults, but yes adults can use it. Normal scratch is aimed at children 8-16 but that doesn’t mean 17 year old people can’t use it

Why are both Scratch and Scratch Jr. for kids?

Both Scratch and Scratch Jr. are made so that it would be appropriate for people of all ages to use them. The difference between them is unrelated to their appropriateness but rather the concepts they teach and the way they teach them. Scratch Jr. teaches more basic programming concepts in ways which younger children can more easily understand, while Scratch teaches more advanced (relatively speaking) programming concepts in ways which may be confusing to younger children.

In addition to what everyone else above said: There are already plenty of 13+ online communities on the Internet. There isn't really much of a need to make another one.
