How To Make Friends on Scratch

Welcome to Scratch!

I'm assuming since you're here in the New Scratcher topic, you're new here. Which is awesome because Scratch is always happy to have new members! A lot of the times around here in the forums, you'll find things like “How you can get your projects noticed” or “The real explanation of a New Scratcher” or “How F4F works”. But, I don't really think you've found something like this yet.

Scratch, in itself, is a platform where kids and teenagers of all ages can code games, stories, animations, share art, and more. But a lot of the time, Scratch is treated more as a social media for kids! You can like and favorite projects, you can follow people, tag people, use hashtags in your project descriptions, the list is endless! So, since Scratch is also very social, you should probably have a friend around here!

Why are Scratch friends so important?

Well, a lot of people have their own opinions, so of course you don't need a friend to get by on Scratch, but it's a lot more fun to have your group of buddies!

Your Scratch friends are people all around the world that you can call on to help you with a project or line of code, you can ask them how they like something you've created, and you can even create a forum topic with them! You can do so much with Scratch friends, so it's my duty to help as many (wanting) people as I can to get them.

If having a friend or two on Scratch is so important, then how do I get one for myself?

There are tons of ways to gain friends on Scratch! But before we jump into the positive ways, I need to give you the list of No-No's in trying to find online friends. These are things you must avoid, unless you purposely want to be alone.

Never advertise. Unless it's like, “Hey, do you mind checking out my game?”, it makes you seem like a troll, and nobody wants to be friends with that kind of person.

Never send hate. If you are sending hate or fake messages to the person you're trying to be friends with, why would they want to be friends with a cyberbully? Even if you're not a cyberbully, that's how they'll see you. You can't be mean to people just for their attention or to be their friend, that's not how it works!

And finally, NEVER break a Community Guideline when trying to make a friend. The Scratch Community Guidelines are here to keep us safe from the dangers of the internet. Help keep Scratch a fun and safe place by following them!

Okay, so I have to be nice, not troll, and follow the guidelines? Easy peasy! I'll befriend EVERYONE on Scratch now!

Oh nonononono. You can't just do that and expect people to come to you. I mean, they might, but it's a lot easier to find a friend yourself. Here are some ways you can make friends with other Scratchers!

  • Join a studio! Find a studio that's based on something you enjoy, and join it! Chances are, you'll meet plenty of people there!
  • Go to this link and meet Scratchers who have posted brand new projects! Click here.
  • Introduce yourself in the forums! I'm sure many other Scratchers would love to meet you!
  • Find a project you like and leave a comment on the creator's profile. Ask them for some advice on how they do their projects! If they aren't too famous, they'll probably get into conversation with you!
  • Talk to me! I'm always open to making new friends and helping out New Scratchers!

I think I got it now!

Great! Feel free to revisit if you ever need help, and if you know more tips on making friends, post them into the chain!

How To Make Friends on Scratch

"Hello! It's great that you want to help out other Scratchers. However, I think we have enough guides in the forums at the moment. Please feel free to welcome new Scratchers on the group welcoming topic or on individual topics created by New Scratchers.

Other places that can always use more helpful Scratchers like you, are the “”Help With Scripts“” and “”Questions About Scratch“” areas - please use them as designed, by responding to topics created by folks with problems to solve

Finally, a really good place for Scratch guides is the Scratch Wiki - check it out and see if it's something you might like to work on. They have a number of guides - and great organization."
