Update the 10-year-old humans.txt file

scratch.mit.edu/humans.txt has remained unchanged since 2014:

"With Scratch, you can program your own interactive stories, games, and animations — and share your creations with others in the online community.

Scratch helps young people learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively — essential skills for life in the 21st century.

Scratch is a project of the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab."

From my understanding, Scratch split from MIT in 2018, rendering the last part of this statement false. I just recently noticed this and thought it'd be nice if the description for this site were updated to reflect this. How this file is changed is up for discussion. I was thinking of either removing the underlined section or rephrasing it as such: "Scratch is a project of the Lifelong Kindergarten Group formerly located at the MIT Media Lab."

humans.txt is the thing that shows up when you search for Scratch, so support, if you're searching for Scratch you likely don't know a lot about it, this would definitely help reduce confusion from newer people.

I don't think it's inaccurate. The Lifelong Kindergarten Group is still a part of MIT, so it doesn't make sense to claim that the Lifelong Kindergarten Group was “formerly located at the MIT Media Lab.”

The quote “Scratch is a project of the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab,” it most likely refers to the following two facts: (1) the Lifelong Kindergarten Group is at the MIT Media Lab (which it is), and (2) Scratch is a project of the Lifelong Kindergarten Group (which it is). You are correct that the physical location of the Scratch Foundation has since split off from MIT, but Scratch was originally developed by the Lifelong Kindergarten Group, and this group is still at the MIT Media Lab.

In other words: the phrase “at the MIT Media Lab” is describing the Lifelong Kindergarten Group, not the Scratch Foundation. As such, the quote is correct as written. The quote is not
Scratch is a project (of the Lifelong Kindergarten Group) at the MIT Media Lab.
but rather, it is:
Scratch is a project (of the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab).

A rewriting of the quote may be along the lines of the following:
Scratch is a project which was originally developed by the Lifelong Kindergarten Group, which is located at the MIT Media Lab.
Again, this is saying the same thing as the current quote, but perhaps a little more precise/clear.

Ah, I see where the confusion is. Thank you for the clarification!

I agree with this re-wording in it being more clear, but it's my bad for misinterpreting the original. If any changes are to be made, I would think it should be condensing the entire file into one line as that's all that search engines use. I had no Idea there was more to this description of scratch till I saw this file.

I'm sure different search engines handle the humans.txt file differently.

A humans.txt is often used to provide a human-readable description and purpose of a site. It's like the opposite of a robots.txt

They first look for a description in the meta tag. If there isn’t a description, then i believe it samples from the page.

Ah, so that's why the description is different from the text file. That makes sense now.
