Also, what do the parents do for a living?? I'm pretty sure the only occurence of them shown to be actively working a job was one picture with the dad working online while the rest of the family fooled around (which also obviously doesn't say much)

I didn't like book 18, the bizarre scenarios don't play well with the down-to-earth-yet-silly vibe that made us all fall in love with the first 14 books, and I personally think that everyone in Plainview (or whatever the Wimpy Kid town is called - the movie names aren't canon anymore) except Greg were kidnapped by aliens off screen between book 17 and 18, seriously - just look at page 45 or anywhere after page 100) the plot itself starts off at something like page 150 (it's like 210 pages long).

Book 19 came out! I got it on day of release, and it’s one of the better ones for its era. (I consider 1-6 the “Classic Era”, 7-12 the “Evolution Era”, 13-15 the “Approaching Downfall Era”, and 16-18 “The Downfall Era”.) Actually, I think 19 creates its own era, The Enlightened Era. It’s a family centered book, with Greg’s maternal side, and it has lots of laughs for everyone to enjoy.

Don’t have one, I think most of the characters are special in their own way. Greg may not be the most likable person, but he has his moments where he does good. Rowley doesn’t care what people think, and I think that is an admirable trait about him. Rodrick is just iconic, no words need to be said, and I think Manny is cheeky but adorable. The parents are good as well and most side characters are as well. They all make us laugh and have a good time reading the books.

Finally got Hot Mess (don't spoil it, not done reading) and it's honestly a great book. Compare that to No Brainer, which suffered from what I like to call “shallow-end syndrome”. Spoilers ahead for No Brainer and Wrecking Ball, highlight the rest of the post to read them.

Shallow-end syndrome is named after The Deep End, one of the greatest Wimpy Kid books. It follows directly off of Wrecking Ball, and the effects of Wrecking Ball, where their house is destroyed partially, are important to the book's premise. However, shallow-end syndrome means a huge event that could change the course of the franchise which is quickly negated after a few pages. That happens in this book. The whole build-up of “will the school close” reaches a climax fitting of the series, but this climax is written away despite there being more stories to tell. It falls flat, and could have nicely led into another book. For example, maybe a book called “Cut Slack” about life in Slacksville Middle School and the resultant appearance in the community, for example having to play a soccer game as the Slacksville Team - against a team representing his hometown. So many stories could come from that.
