Could you describe what you mean by a sponsorship?

Something about making an advertisement on Scratch for a real-life product while getting actual money for it doesn't sit right with me. My guess is that it's not allowed.

i think, while it seems morally ambiguous, i don't see anything in the CGs or TOU that would specifically disallow it.

Possibly this part of the Terms of Use?

I'm not sure if a single sponsorship would be enough to be considered repeated advertisement, but it could be enough for the Scratch Team to disallow it on the grounds that it is harmful to the community.

but it would still have to be something harmful to scratchers, so you could make the argument in a lot of cases that a sponsor is not harmful. for example, if a scratcher was hypothetically sponsored by a learning platform like Brilliant and got the project taken down, it could be (possibly successfully) argued that it is actually helpful to the scratch community by teaching them, or that Audible can help people understand literature or that dbrand could help people not damage their phone, and etc. it's very ambiguous on what is and isn't allowed.

And when you do, the Scratch Team can counter-argue that it is harmful. Note that a sponsorship/advertisement does not need to physically or mentally threaten someone in order to be considered “harmful.”

An example that comes to mind, while not about sponsorships, is something similar. Someone asked some time ago whether it's allowed to give away gift cards on Scratch. The Scratch Team does not allow this, even though on the surface one would think that merely giving away a gift card is “helpful” rather than “harmful.”

I've seen other examples where Scratchers, say, advertise some website where they are selling their books or their art. Sure, books and art are not inherently “harmful,” but this sort of monetary advertisement is not allowed on Scratch.

In general, real money and Scratch do not mix well.

No. Aside from the fact that Scratch is a non-profit website and should not be used for SEO purposes, there’s also laws regarding advertising towards children, and you could land yourself into legal hot water for using Scratch for this purpose.

Sadly, my forum signature was eaten by an evil kumquat.
