Sonic and how the first videogame war affected him.

Allow me to say this, “sonic was born in, for, and to start war” and as the essay goes on, you will understand this phrase soon, and I tell you it isn’t what you’d think.

In June of 1991, in the late life of the nes and before the snes came out, when sega was starting with the genesis, sonic was born, created to be what mario wasn’t and more, with a gameplay focused on physics and graphics. It was a war between companies for the domination of the industry, great technological achievements were made due to this “conflict”, even today, many people are confused and are not sure of who won this war, that is why I will give my opinion in the matter, and my opinion is that sega was defeated in this “war”.

Most of us know the history already, and maybe someone here was there at the end of it, but the point isn’t that; the interesting part of this “conflict” is that many don’t know the result of this war, as I said, but I think it is because the result of the war was not evident until now. Think of it, now days mario has enjoyed a very stable and consistently good time since that one war in terms of game quality, with the most recent exponents being mario wonder in the 2D field, and bowsers fury in the 3D field, being both very great exponents of mario… and when we look at sonic, we get a quite different result.
Sega went through this confusing and inconsistent era, in which they experimented in a search for the system that would make a good 3D sonic formula to follow, that search started in sonic heroes which is a very mediocre game in terms of game design, then we had an 0 and a 6 and a loading screen, then we had a car simulator without a car in the desert, then we had a hack and slash, then we had a hack and slash but slower, then we had mario galaxy, then we had sonic forces (to which I don’t need to make a joke about because it IS the joke), and besides that we had sonic boom… good tv show, horrible sonic game, and lastly we had the sonic mania downloadable background recolor.

The current exponent of sonic games are sonic superstars in 2D area and sonic frontiers in 3D area, and let’s be honest, they are good but not beyond that. After this short analisis of what happened after the first videogame war, the only question remaining is… what happened? I will explain why I think sega lost the console war and what I think are the consequences.

Some would think sonic was born before the war, but as I have explained before in a prior work, sonic was only truly born when the 2 formulas were created, the “linear” and the “exploration” formulas, which were created in sonic 2 and sonic CD, games that were released while the war, demonstrating my point “sonic was born in war”. Now, I want you to understand a new concept: “the classic sonic orbit”, a concept that is refers to how the 2 formulas work and circle around the classic sonic core (CSC). The “classic sonic orbit” is a term that could be used for how the CSC works along with any of the 2 formulas.
The 2 formulas were made with the objective of evolving, they were made to be competitively growing, the CSC was made with the objective of being functional, of supporting the weight of this console war, it was made to be good regardless of working with other systems or working by itself, this means that the 2 formulas are dependant of the CSC because part of the exploration formula is of fighting against or making good use of the physics to explore depending on the situation, and one of the main points of the linear formula is that reflexes and reaction times are fundamental for the risk and reward base. That is exactly why the big and main mistake sega made was not to give time for this “classic sonic orbit” to evolve… and that was because they “didn’t have”.

“Sonic was born for war”, the question arises with this statement, if sonic was made for war, why did it have no time to develop the classic sonic orbit? You see, I described the 2 elements of the classic sonic orbit, the formulas, and the CSC, but each have different purposes, as I explained, the CSC is the aspect of sonic that was made for war, the 2 formulas aren’t, they were made to evolve naturally, but most importantly they were originally planned for 2D game design.
It was then that the new big thing came in the industry, the 3D, and all console producer companies started planning on the 3D technology. Sega decided to force the classic sonic orbit into 3d without a correct natural transition, think of it, all the 8-bit games are CSC centered just like sonic 1, sonic 2 was the only exponent of the linear formula, sonic cd and Knuckles Chaotix are the only exponents for the exploration formula, and sonic 3&K is a very good fusion between them but that doesn’t take away the fact that it is the only one in its area. The fact they made 3 “classic sonic orbits” with 1, 2 at the most, exponents shows evidently that they never got to master these formulas.

This might sound weird, but I want you to remember 3 games of those times, Metal Slug, Castlevania Symphony Of The Night, and lastly Rayman, you will soon understand. Metal slug was an arcade game that was a success, so it was ported to consoles, among them the ps1, and though it was a 2D game, it was a success as well. Castlevania is a saga that was mainly in Nintendo consoles, but konami decided to make a 2D game for the ps1, symphony of the night was not so much an economic success, but ppl loved it and it is considered one of the best games in the franchise and even of the console. Lastly, and the biggest example, Rayman, an absolute 2D success for the ps1 and other consoles of the time, these 3 games are evidence of how 2D still had a space in the 3D boom.

Sega, looking at their main rivals in those times, sony and Nintendo, made the decision of replacing all 3 “classic sonic orbits” and replace them with the feel of speed rather than CSC itself, as far as I’m informed given I haven’t played sonic adventure, but I do notice they changed the formula given how different is the focus of the speed and cue to the new characteristic, the homing attack.
Lastly, I would like to explain my third point, “sonic was born to start war”, going back to the CSC, sega created the CSC with the main objective of a console war, something solid, a system that works just as good with alongside other systems or by itself, it was made to be competitive, but the problem is that without its due progress, without its due EVOLUTION, the CSC is made to start but not to finish a war, a system made to be static cannot beat systems made to evolve, this is why naturally sega made the 2 formulas, sonic orbit was the answer to have a chance in this videogame console war, but sega did not give time for the classic sonic orbit to evolve properly because they made so many “classic sonic orbits” that they never centered on one, remember that there was the “linear formula” the “exploration formula” and a fusion of the two without counting the games that are the CSC by itself like in sonic 1 or the 8-bit sonics.

I’m not going to go in depth about mario’s game design methodology because, 1. It is very complex to explain, 2. Because this is a sonic essay, not a mario essay. Anyway, sega made the decision of replacing the classic sonic orbit, all for the sake of competition, thing that is not a mistake, the mistake is not that sega changed the classic sonic orbit, the mistake was that sega did not give enough time to develop correctly all the classic sonic orbits, or at least the “linear” formula one, which was the easiest to translate from 2D to 3D, in other words, if sonic 2 just had a sequel in gameplay terms for the Saturn, sonic adventure might have ended up… different, maybe even better.

With my explanation of how sonic lost, I will proceed to explain why I ever noticed this. You see, after sega stopped console production, sonic went through a very confusing, inconsistent, and very peculiar phase in the saga. Sonic adventure and sonic adventure 2 (specially adventure 2) are not the best games of the saga though they had parts more than saveable, it was a game that oscillated very randomly between excellent and plainly bad, for example, all those sonic gameplay parts are the good parts that ppl remember most, in contrast we have the searching and fishing parts, which were bad… simply bad, and the parts of tails and flying were… mediocre but not bad, but in summary the 2 adventure games were very inconsistent in the gameplay aspect. After adventure we had heroes, which was bad and period, it was not really bad, but it was just not good. After that we had shadow… I abstain of comment here, except that I don’t think it was as bad as they say. Then we had an 0 and a 6 and a loading screen. Then we had secret rings, which was not bad but just not polished in its main mechanic, and then we had unleashed, a hack and slash that was good enough, simply good and nothing much. Then we had Black Knight, which was a hack and slash but a bit faster than unleashed. But we got a bit better, we had sonic colors, generations and lost world which were really good… until sonic fell off a 133-floor building and broke both legs in sonic boom… also knuckles was buffed, which… I mean… is good, right? And then… and then… sonic forces… (we were so high, and we had to fall so low).
Sonic frontiers and sonic superstars are a step in a sort of good direction, though im not very sure about the one game in which every time you look up at the sky you see random rails, and all ive heard up till now is that superstars is real mid.

Part of this is the main reason why ppl practically worshipped sonic maina, because it is a sonic game that follows correctly the classic sonic orbit, though it doesn’t do anything different from sonic 2 or cd (mainly sonic 2), sonic mania is just good, it isn’t the best classic sonic game, its just that after playing the classics over and over again, we had a new thing and everyone acted exaggeratedly towards the game, sonic mania is good, but not that good. By changing the classic sonic core, sega entered in a confusing phase because they lost a proper direction to follow with the sonic franchise, as a result we now have such good and such terrible games in the same saga.

Before the conclusion, I want to clarify some things. I do not think that sega made a mistake by changing sonic game design methodology in sonic adventure, it was a decision made because of the mistake, and the mistake was not giving the classic sonic orbit time to develop and to perfect it.
Lastly, I do not believe Nintendo won the first game console war because they had a better quality, but because of a decision sega directives had, it wasn’t neither the quality, nor the technology, not even the main games that were influential in this game console war, just simple and direct orders based on economics and a “supposed” pressure of the industry to transition to 3D.

Concluding, sega created sonic to start a sort of competitivity with marketing purposes, sonic got to find a way to evolve in 2 (maybe 3 some would say, if you include the fusion of 3&K) formulas, sega tried to force the classic sonic orbit into the 3D, which I “theorise” was the original sonic extreme, it was canceled because it just didn’t world or because the technological advance was going faster than the speed the game was developing, and so it was canceled, then sega made the decision of replacing this methodology of the classic sonic orbit for other systems that did not quite worked with the public, until they found a good way to design sonic… until someone in sega had the marvelous idea of making a “reboot”, that did not work and so they went back to the methodology of generations and colors… giving us forces.

I hope you understood this work of mine, and I hope that you agree with me, else I would like to hear why do you think differently from me and how did everything is according to you. I hear lots of people talk about how they want a SA3, but what would make another sonic adventure game? Just the name? Is it the gameplay? Say Sonic Frontiers ended up being named SA3, would you say it is a true successor?
