You can do similar stuff for blocks that already exist like next costume/backdrop and change () by () though, and there already is a previous backdrop option in the switch backdrop to () blocks:

Completely get the fact that there are easy workarounds to lots of things proposed, but a lot of people - especially young children - that aren't aware of the forums would have some trouble finding workarounds. You think it'd be easy, but even I had trouble working it out. I may just lack intellect but I'm no less smart than young children and let me tell you, a heck of a lot of people are going to have trouble with it. These would be so easy to code in for 4.0 and hopefully the team listen, it's really up to us to spread awareness. Anyway my time is pretty cramped so I'll go. Bye!

Agree. While there is a simple workaround, this “previous costume” block is just a QOL thing. We have a “next costume” block. A “previous costume” block just completes the set.

Exactly, it’s even been coded in, if you make a costume called previous costume and select it in the dropdown, then delete the costume, the block will function like a previous costume block. All ST needs to do is make it an option in the dropdown by default.

To be clear, the multiple workarounds are:

I made a couple different versions because sometimes users to not want the costume to loop back to the last costume of the sprite when on the first costume.

I support. Even though there is a workaround:
switch costume to ((costume #) - (1))
It takes more time and also probably wouldn't take the ST too long to create.

As seen in my post above, that's not exactly a workaround.

If the suggestion is simple, and the workaround is simple. It depends on the usage of the block.
If the suggestion is complex, yet the workaround is simple, then use the workaround.

How do you determine the last part of each sentence (the part whether you should use the workaround or not)?

I already know about that project, but you cannot select it as an option without creating and removing a costume called previous costume. The stack block version (being separate) does not exist in the editor at all. Read his post again
