Even if there was a limit of five tags or so, I don't get what would stop users from tagging unrelated things.

Yes, you can tag it with #games #animations #stories #art #tutorials. The better option is to make an explore category selector, so only one can be selected.

The limit could just be 3 again (which was the limit beforehand), and the report button. Also less unrelated things would be able to be tagged, though maybe one main “tag” (as in, one of the explore things) could be selected and then you'd be able to do 2-3 other tags.

Re-add the tag limit

FrostyRAhAz wrote:

Tags are a feature in Scratch. You can put them in your project descriptions to increase the chance of your projects being on the top of the search results. Example tag:
#thisisanexample

Back in Scratch 2.0, there was a limit on how many tags you can use. Although that got taken away in 3.0 and many Scratchers are taking advantage of this. I suggest that the Scratch Team should re-add the tag limit to prevent people from spamming tags, putting unnecessary/unrelated tags, and overusing tags. I think that the limit should maybe be a maximum of 5 tags per project, 3 was too small anyway.

Because without the tag limit you can do this:

I’m not kidding this all was included in just ONE project. Yes, all of these tags where crammed in one project. Yet 95% is just unrelated and spammed tags. Please add the tag limit back.

I just realized that it’s pretty obvious on which scratcher made that project.
i think the limit should be like 15 or 20

Bump! I support this because now the fame-hungry people are saying that “it's allowed if it's relevant to the project” only spamming #games and #all. This would help this issue a lot.

Could you give an example of a project that needs more than 3 tags? I can’t find any.
I cannot think of a situation where someone would need to use more than 3 tags unless that person was spamming, so can anyone come up with anything?
Also, if anyone is wondering, this quote was from another topic.

Za-Chary wrote:

Yes, let me remind you that it is not okay to put unrelated tags on your project. Please use the Report button on any projects that use tags which are unrelated to the project.

However — I don't think using lots of related tags is against the rules.
Old post but came here from my duplicate suggestion that got closed.

This is the problem, though, in my opinion. It's extremely difficult to define what a “related” tag is. Can I tag my project with #music because I used someone else's song that I backpacked as the soundtrack? It's technically related. Can I tag my project with #art because technically someone did the art for it, just not me?

Tags should ideally be for documenting the primary topic of a project, in my opinion. I'm not saying this because I think it's “unfair” for some projects to get views and some not to, because that's how the internet works. However, I don't think it's fair for certain sub-communities of Scratch members to have it be next to impossible to find like-minded projects.

Yeah, Scratch is a coding site primarily, but there are other forms of projects on the site, as you are probably well aware. This is probably sometimes to the irritation of the Scratch team who's trying to develop a site primarily for programming. But there is definitely a fine line between “music” and “art” projects and projects that happen to have those things but where they are not the primary focus of the project. Even if art and music aren't the main point of Scratch there's still ways for programming-centric projects to feature them in such a way where the corresponding tags are appropriate, (eg. pen, noteblocks, music maker-type projects, the infamous Cat Piano, etc.) and ways that those tags would not appropriate (eg. a platformer with music from YouTube in the background).

So there's arguably a lot of nuance as to what a fair “tag” is and to be frank I don't think the Scratch team has time to sift through hours of reports determining whether or not each case was okay. Also, I've been a site member for nine years and just today found out that mis-tagging a project was a reportable offense, so I don't think that's been well communicated to the site as a whole.

What's the solution to all this? Let people determine what the most fair tags are for their own projects by limiting them to three. People mostly want to falsely advertise or tag their projects to blast them all over the site. If they're limited to three, they're probably going to stick to ones that are actually relevant, because they want people that actually want to look at their project to be able to find it. I see this suggestion as the easiest way forward for everyone on an objectively increasingly spammy website.

I imagine you'd get a fair amount of pushback, but probably only from the people who are misusing the site to “get more views” which is a pretty small demographic is it is. It helps basically everyone else to more effectively imagine/program/share their projects with the community.

Thanks for reading if you got this far.
