Local Server Hosting (that uses your WiFi)
although it would cost money to make, it would free up server space so ST has to buy lessI don’t think scratch team can afford this with their income for a basically useless feature as far as they are concerned (I think it’s a cool idea it’s just not viable)nope iircDoesn’t cloudflare cost moneyNOYou can mask your server's IP by using Cloudflare Tunnels
In order to do this you would have to expose the REAL LIFE location of your house to anyone who opens the projectAnyways, what if someone hacked the project servers with api or something??Do you mean the sort of hacks people use to change the values of variables, or hacking to gain access to the system?
(it’s actually $2,400 a year all at once or if they pay monthly it’s $3,000 a year)

Me when I purposefully spread misinformation on the internetI don’t think scratch team can afford this with their income for a basically useless feature as far as they are concerned (I think it’s a cool idea it’s just not viable)although it would cost money to make, it would free up server space so ST has to buy less

- Who said that Scratch would need to pay for this
- Cloud servers use little storage, with most data being stored in memory
- Scratch would still have to maintain their own servers

quote: cloudflare is not needed, from all i know. scratch would use less server space making room for more projects and less client lag; the site would be less annoying to use. these squares are signs that server space is running out. -quoteMe when I purposefully spread misinformation on the internetI don’t think scratch team can afford this with their income for a basically useless feature as far as they are concerned (I think it’s a cool idea it’s just not viable)although it would cost money to make, it would free up server space so ST has to buy less

also: cloud hacking may be less prone to occur; the default location of the scratch servers is already known, homes are private - scratch servers are publicquote: cloudflare is not needed, from all i know. scratch would use less server space making room for more projects and less client lag; the site would be less annoying to use. these squares are signs that server space is running out. -quoteMe when I purposefully spread misinformation on the internetI don’t think scratch team can afford this with their income for a basically useless feature as far as they are concerned (I think it’s a cool idea it’s just not viable)although it would cost money to make, it would free up server space so ST has to buy less

I mean, I would absolutely never participate in this myself, but…
do I care if all the other Scratchers go bankrupt? Nah… HEY WAIT READ THIS, I WAS KIDDING!!!

I’d rather not let ST know my locationI’d rather not let a project know my locationOnly ST Would. There would have to be some security measures to stop hacking tho
Anyways, what if someone hacked the project servers with api or something??
I don’t know if you realize it, but they already know your IP. In fact, any website you visit is able to see it. It’s just up to the site to decide whether or not to store it.
That’s why the ST can IP ban belligerent users (which would be impossible without their knowing the users’s IPs).

I know. But that’s for the website and it’s developers to see, not random USERS on the website. I’m concerned that it could be leaked to users that aren’t supposed to see itI’d rather not let ST know my locationI’d rather not let a project know my locationOnly ST Would. That should say everything about the possibility of this.
That is, a middle man server.

(#52)It's not a necropost, this topic was created too recently for any necroposts to happen. Plus, it was on-topic (I'm assuming you're using the word necropost instead of off-topic).
-snip-
necropost of shame
Also, necroposts don't exist in the Suggestions forum (but they kind of do if it's off-topic).

Ok, you said, quote, “I’d rather not let the ST know my location.” But I digress.
Why does the ST need to share your personal IP for this system to work? Wouldn’t that go against their privacy policies?

Well, ST manages to mask theirsSource?
EDIT: I just realized there were 2 more pages… oops
Anyway, the goal of hosting it on user’s networks is to allow for more… server space?
There is a problem in that:
1. You would slow your internet speed.
2. It would be controlled by the hosts, who would be users, and thus could cause moderation problems.
3. The WiFi routers themselves (without modding by the user) wouldn’t be able to run a cloud server, so it must be run from a device on the network.
4. This device would need to be on 24/7.
5. Most scratch users are kids. They aren’t going to understand how to setup a server, port-forward through the firewall, and protect themselves from hackers. It would be a risk for the hosts to host the servers.

1. Potentially, but to a very minor amount.
2. How?
3. Yes they can. All routers essentially just, well, route information.
4. Turning off a computer does more harm then good.
5. Quick setup, maybe we should have older users do it, see my last page statement on the middle man server, no firewall required, and if you mean a SQL Injection, no one uses plain text databases anymore. Not if they're SQL at least.
Also, it wouldn't be a risk for the user.

2. For the users to host anything, they would need to have some server program. The users could modify this server program to read incoming IPs or do other things with the information they are given.
3. I'm talking about installing software to run the server. As far as I know (which isn't saying much), routers don't let users modify their programming (except for maybe updates).
4. I… don't understand.
5. Yea, I guess.
(This is all with the assumption that the devices hosting the cloud servers will download a software to run the server, and then connect to the scratch servers through their router.)

I honestly support this, this could be used to make some really cool technical projects and perhaps take a bit of strain off of scratch's servers .
Yes, somebody could find your IP address, but any person with sufficient knowledge to run such a cloud server probably knows the (very minor) risks. Knowing somebody's IP address is almost never a security risk in of itself anyways.
