Okay so when I was a kid I thought it'd be cool if there were three seasonsOkay can we talk about how there needs to be a freaking Undertale TV Series
I literally been making my own in my head ever since I was 10
And it was like
Neutral
Then pacifist
Then genocide
Or something
But now I think it'd be better if it weren't a direct retelling

So kinda like your idea but more timeliness related. Basically every season is like a reset and the routes change

I dunno for me I feel like an Undertale show wouldn't actually even have resetting just because it doesn't make much sense other than in the context of a gameThat explanation makes absolutely no sense and as such I morbidly request your elaborationOkay so when I was a kid I thought it'd be cool if there were three seasonsOkay can we talk about how there needs to be a freaking Undertale TV Series

i think this idea is too “out-there” for any actual show but the closest parallel i can think of to “resetting” a video game is “rebooting” a show. so you could have a diegetic art style/general vibe shift at the end of each season (which in-universe is caused by Chara/whatever force messing with the timeline still) and then you could have each season be a different route. i don't think that concept would ever be sustainable for an actual show, though. you'd probably need different artists/writers every season, depending on how drastic the shift isI dunno for me I feel like an Undertale show wouldn't actually even have resetting just because it doesn't make much sense other than in the context of a gameThat explanation makes absolutely no sense and as such I morbidly request your elaborationOkay so when I was a kid I thought it'd be cool if there were three seasonsOkay can we talk about how there needs to be a freaking Undertale TV Series

I think that an animated sitcom about the characters in Undertale in an anthology style would be sustainable and a lot of funi think this idea is too “out-there” for any actual show but the closest parallel i can think of to “resetting” a video game is “rebooting” a show. so you could have a diegetic art style/general vibe shift at the end of each season (which in-universe is caused by Chara/whatever force messing with the timeline still) and then you could have each season be a different route. i don't think that concept would ever be sustainable for an actual show, though. you'd probably need different artists/writers every season, depending on how drastic the shift isI dunno for me I feel like an Undertale show wouldn't actually even have resetting just because it doesn't make much sense other than in the context of a gameThat explanation makes absolutely no sense and as such I morbidly request your elaborationOkay so when I was a kid I thought it'd be cool if there were three seasonsOkay can we talk about how there needs to be a freaking Undertale TV Series

It's certainly interesting but I think Toby Fox doesn't actually like explicitly referencing Chara and resets as actual devices outside of the actual gamei think this idea is too “out-there” for any actual show but the closest parallel i can think of to “resetting” a video game is “rebooting” a show. so you could have a diegetic art style/general vibe shift at the end of each season (which in-universe is caused by Chara/whatever force messing with the timeline still) and then you could have each season be a different route. i don't think that concept would ever be sustainable for an actual show, though. you'd probably need different artists/writers every season, depending on how drastic the shift isActually sounds like an interesting idea to me.
It seems like it kind of breaks an unspoken contract between player and game that the metanarrative is supposed to be kind of “secret” even though everybody knows about it
I think that Toby would absolutely go for a sort of spin off show that would not follow the plot of the game and likely wouldn't even have Frisk or Chara in it
Being so entrenched in the fandom makes it easy to forget that Toby actually hates talking about or alluding to the metanarrative because it ruins what grace and subtlety the actual game has

You are correct there, metanarrative in general, not just in undertale, when done correctly feels subtle and fragile. Having references to Frisk, Chara, Resets, or W.D. would most likely ruin the metanarrative.

Idk why but that just reminded me of the ending to TAWOG

Just finished Undertale Neutral yesterday. I k1lled Undyne and Mettaton and spared basically almost every enemy encounter. Although it was epic throughout, the ending kinda felt…. idk, mid? It was probably because I (Spoilers) killed Undyne which caused Toriel to be overthrown even though she would've had the new cool rule of allowing humans to be treated as friends, and now the Underground is in an uneasy anarchy. It ain't all bad, because Toriel was still alive and so was Papyrus, but still…

I played undertale for so long and never thought about doing a run where you kill everyone but boss monsters and when I did it was interesting because there's so many cool details

-snip-Metanarratives are a seriously overused device. Undertale is one of my three favorite games of all time but I despise what it did to video game stories. It's so easy and cheap to make a OneShot type metanarrative and the success of Undertale made that very profittable and popular. Undertale doesn't have that kind of story though. Undertale makes it a point to never talk directly to the player and keeps firm lines between the story of the game and the personal conversation with the elements in the game, while leaving what's mechanical and what's a part of the story up to interpretation. This isn't the ideal way to do this, but for the scale and story of Undertale, this is very very effective. I hope Toby Fox holds onto that.

Yeah, it would be. No need to use a stove ever again, that’s a plus!i love how toriel's book just disintegrates into her lap when she gets out of her chairfire magic. very efficient

Isn't Chara directly referenced on the story though? Like the whole cutscene where it shows snippets of her falling down and being adopted by Toriel. I guess explaining further spoils it but other than that she's directly referenced within the game-snip-Metanarratives are a seriously overused device. You know, I really like Undertale, but if I'm being honest, Neutral is kinda 8.5/10 for me out of all the masterpiece games I've played. The ending was kinda mid and a few parts felt a little off. But I'm pretty sure if I did Pacifist my personal rating would be much higher, but yea…
