It's believed that there was a mishandling with the servers that caused the entire AT&T network to go down

From what I could find:

The “ancestor” to furries (“funny animal fandom”) existed waaaaaay before today with evidence of it existing well before 1980. On February 29, 1976, a poster for “Vootie” (An “Amateur Press Association” or APA) was made, calling for artists involved with anthropomorphic rocks, machines, and even mentioning the “funny animal fandom.” Then when Vootie fell another APA came up called “Rowrbrazzle” which replaced Vootie, cited as some as the transition from “funny animals” to furries. Then bla-bla-bla Confurence bla-bla-bla Anthrocon and here we are today.

Also apparently the first cons came up since the “furry” part of comic/sci-fi cons was gaining a huge following, so they decided to branch off and make a separate con.
