Replying to Users on the Forums
There should be an option to reply to people on the forums. It would work the same as in comments. The reply starts with the @username thing and the user who's getting replied to gets notified.

Pretty sure 6.3 extends to notifying on the forums
Anyway, quoting is enough though, no?
6.3 Notification for being mentioned in comments
Some users would like to be notified whenever someone mentions their username in a comment on the website. Although such an option was considered, it was not added due to the potential for spam. For instance, someone could write @Scratcher multiple times to spam that user's notifications.
Anyway, quoting is enough though, no?

It would work the same as replying to comments. It doesn't notify you just because you get quoted. snip

I mean, if you're following the topic (and people might follow the topic once they post on it), then you'll get notified. People could always comment on your profile/projects if they really have something urgent to say. It would work the same as replying to comments. It doesn't notify you just because you get quoted.

What if comments are off? People could always comment on your profile/projects if they really have something urgent to say.

Projects could work. Otherwise: What if comments are off?

If this gets implemented, the feature to edit forum posts should be removed, as someone could say something nice, wait until someone replies that they agree, and edit the post to say something offensive.

(#3)I think this is a more relevant rejection

9.2 Notification for being quoted in topics
Due to the way that the forum structure works, this suggestion simply is not possible to add. Even if it was possible, there would be a very high possibility of getting spammed with unwanted notifications. The technical issues and the potential for abuse make this feature rather impractical. If you want to stay updated on a certain topic, you can always follow the topic and get notified for new posts that are made.
If you want to be notified when someone quotes your post, just follow the topic.

What if they have no projects? Also, for the following topics point, what if you're trying to reply to a user who hasn't followed the thread, has no projects, and has comments off? Projects could work.

This is technically already implemented from what I'm seeing below.

Support, because they're already called “new replies” below the forum topic, and comments on the main site already have replies.

Yes, but what I mean is that it's titled as “replies”. It's not that I support the suggestion or anything like that, but I was just pointing it out. Not what OP means, actually.

On the forums, there is the option to “Follow Discussion”, and that will alert you when there is a new post.
