ok st tell us who tripped on the wire
There's kind of a reason why I've been yelling my head off the past two years about how I don't like the forums being used for April Fools Day. Which is nothing compared to how growly some of the remaining engineers feel about the forums. Not all the website lag is caused by the forums, but if the website lags and then forums go down afterwards, it's because the forums transformed into a lag monster. Nothing much we can do until after the lag monster has gone through its temper tantrum.

So the tl;dr is basically that it was a resource management problem?

Something like that. The forums take up a disproportionate amount of resources, and sometimes it bites off too much. It’s not new to Scratch, and the whole thing relates to kind of an inherent flaw with forum tech in general (which is why some websites got rid of their forums entirely. We haven’t got to that point yet, but we have been discussing about the alternatives when it does reach that point).Interesting personificationThe forums have been going down wayyyyy more frequently. (#8)do the forums sit on a separate server to the rest of scratchr2? if not, it might be a good idea to split them off in such a way, even if it means having a separate subdomain that hooks into scratch.Something like that. that said, i feel like the work needed is only slightly less than needed to migrate to a new system, but if it means preventing scratch from lagging into oblivion, it might be pretty helpful.
have you considered something a bit less streamlined like zendesk? i know it may not be popular with many users, but if it scales well and does the job (and i know a few companies whose users make a lot of posts), then i feel like it may be a consideration.

(#9)I'd suggest a different form of technology entirely… While I don't necessarily agree with all of the consequences that this would entail, the technology used for comments (but with an extended feature set and word count) would likely be the best option (As, I believe, you {cheddargirl} yourself has said in the past).(#8)do the forums sit on a separate server to the rest of scratchr2? if not, it might be a good idea to split them off in such a way, even if it means having a separate subdomain that hooks into scratch.Something like that. (#10)For many things (e.g. stickies, important topics and suggestions), comments are inherently Bad.

That said, forums for suggestions can get messy, and practically speaking, it's a better idea to use some kind of system that has ST approved bug reports + suggestions, to filter out (and merge) duplicates

(#11)There should be some sort of forums, we need some sort of unifying force for Scratch or the community will probably enter civil war. /j kinda but nor really(#10)For many things (e.g. stickies, important topics and suggestions), comments are inherently Bad.

That's basically what their GitHub is for, albeit it's slightly harder for most Scratchers to contribute to the GitHub, with the 13+ age requirement for accounts(#10)For many things (e.g. stickies, important topics and suggestions), comments are inherently Bad.

Zendesk is really more of an e-mail management-like system (aka, equivalent of what we use to manage “Contact Us” stuff), so that's not really the best option for us. It's actually quite a lot of things we'd have to replace, and we'd have to replace the forums with probably more than one tool or feature (e.g., whatever will be used to replace “Questions About Scratch” might not be the same thing that will be used to replace “Show and Tell”, etc.).(#8)do the forums sit on a separate server to the rest of scratchr2? if not, it might be a good idea to split them off in such a way, even if it means having a separate subdomain that hooks into scratch.Something like that. The service we use for “Contact Us” is like that, too, but ZenDesk and it's competitors are helpdesk technology. And not cheap. (#16)There has been some ideas of migrating to Discourse as it is open-source. If something like this were to happen, would all the old topics remain intact or will they all have to restart?

(#19)The 3.0 look is CSS, it could be changed without changing the backend (Although it might be a pain).
