REMEMBER ONLY TO QUOTE PART OF THIS

Wish I was in ‘Straya. We went back to shool after Christmas break. And we don’t get off again until March (spring break, but I feel the name is biased towards the northern hemisphere).

Students can bring their own devices, but the rules are incredibly vague. Some teachers don't care as long as you're paying attention; others will confiscate immediately. Bringing your own computer is a bit overboard (and I doubt it's even allowed) - I've only seen one student do it. Most students bring their MP3s or phones only to have them confiscated if they get them out in class.

We rarely go to the computer lab, but we do have computer classes. Each one of our classes lasts ~50 minutes, so you can get something done. I have 3 computer classes this semester. Beat that!

When you first log on to a computer under your account, it takes HOURS to load. But after that, you're usually okay and it rarely takes more than 10 seconds. But if you have to switch computers, expect for the huge time it takes to load again.

Our passwords are not 3 letters long, but they are very insecure, and you are not allowed to change them. They're all $(your first and last initials)(5-digit-long student id number). So our passwords are like $xx12345. And when some teachers do their attendence, they shine on the projector their official attendance sheet, which has each student's name and next to it - their id number! It is ridiculously easy to get hacked by another student. All they need is your id number. Thank god almost no one looks at those and they are too busy chatting to care. And logging into another student's account is not allowed anyways, but it has been done.
Okay. I remember someone bringing has smartphone once and it got confiscated (Yes, it was the same person who logged into his Google+ account)

At our school, people can bring any devices they want, but at your own risk. Kindles seem to be quite popular, probably because you have to bring in a book or an e-reader for 5mins reading at the start of English. There's WiFi all round the school, and the password changes every day so they put a posterup saying what it is, and everyone crowds round to set their devices.
our school doesn't even have WiFi!

I hate all Windows computers anyway, I have Linux, which IMO, is the best OS.

*cough*linux masterrace*cough*

Anyhoo, CC4 is terrible, it stops you from right clicking, changing desktop backgrounds, it even cuts down your start menu.
Seriously??

Anyhoo,

School Has Started!

Our school now has iPads! . By the looks of things, a lot of the teachers use Chrome now and they're also using classdojo now. Anyway, I have computer at Friday and I'm a better computer teacher than our proper one!

Today, for some reason, we used the iPad to take a selfie of ourselves for the teacher to use.
Once it's Friday, I'll tell you what has happened.

Our school got some iPads last year. They have a few Apple TVs which they can plug into the Smart Boards or projectors. One of the teachers let me use it with my iPad to figure out how to use it and mirror the screen.

They have stricter regulations for the Chromebooks than for the desktops, but still, there are a lot of workarounds against the blocks. (I remember that someone found at least five ways to bypass the Youtube ban. But now they have something that erases the workarounds.) And the Chromebooks are technically ours because we bought them from the school.

During lunch and break about 70% of the entire school are on them. (Actually, that saves a lot of fights over who gets what basketball court to play on and stuff like that because we only have so many of them.) They don't even block that many games (and some people just go on their phones). I think the school admins don't really care; they just don't want the games and stuff to distract from students' learning, and the teachers themselves can handle that pretty well.

No one really cares about the desktops because they're laggy and you can only use them if you have Computers or Robotics.

EDIT: Oh, and about Wikipedia, our English teacher would give us a zero if we tried to use it for our source. So no one ever does.

Well, our entire school plays outside and fights like that happen all the time. Also, about 80% of boys at our school know swear words and say at least one every day (which they either learnt from their parents, other kids or the popular adult FPS at our school that even 7 year olds play, Call Of Duty ).

Our school doesn't have Chromebooks because

1. Our school can't afford to replace Chromebooks if they get damaged even if they were $100 (OLPC is more expensive right now and it's supposed to be $100 )

2. this (WARNING: Excerise)

There"s an age at which they think it's cool to swear because it is new to them, usually around middle school 6th grade. But by time you get to high school no one thinks of it nor cares.

COOL?! At my school, if anyone said a bad word that someone could hear clearly, everyone would just be like “ohhhhh” and report them to the teacher immediately.

Swearing happens at my school all the time and no one seems to care except for the teachers. And even they are usually laid back on swearing. A few teachers will immediately write you up, but they are by far the minority.

We have Windows 7 Desktops and Chromebooks at our school, however most of the Windows are old and outdated. The Chromebooks work nicely, but we also have older modules that some classes are stuck with.
Also anyone know how to get around a school Barracuda filter?

Oh, I forgot about Friday.

Also, bump.

At school on Friday, we typed up what we did on the holidays. However, it was boring.

There were kids talking, shouting, rattling monitors around - some of the computers even fail to boot up because of kids. Our computers were very slow because they were designed for Windows XP (and as you know, they now have 7). At sport, our school is one of the best in our entire state yet in computers, kids in general…

ChocolatePi wrote:

… I think they're rowdy, uneducated buffoons sometimes. … [topic came from here]
…which is an accurate description of kids in general at our school when it comes to computers.

We basically did what I did in pre-primary at home. First, we opened up a Word (MS Office ) document and typed in the title but nothing else (which took 5 minutes for most people). Then, we had to save our work, but we had to type in “Recount” and nothing else (another 5 minutes) . If we didn't do that or went ahead all at (or looked at the computer's specs), we were banned from the computer room FOR THE REST OF THE TERM. That was just how bad it was.

After 10 minutes, we could finally type up our work! For some reason, the Scratch Wiki wasn't blocked, but the main scratch site was blocked for the same reason YouTube is - it's too inappropriate.

Like last year, we got cut off by about 10 minutes and I only managed to just finish (even though I was the first person to be). Also, when we shut down, many people click Shut Down on the computer then they go and hold the ON button. Then, every time you go on, it says “Windows did not shut down correctly”.

Oh, and our school does have a Anti-Virus (An outdated version of McAfee that doesn't even work for students because you need to be an administrator to run it).

Edit: So many fixes.

I found a few anime websites that weren't blocked. Scratch is blocked for being “non-educational”… *facepalm*

Nobody really cares much about swearing at my school. Sometimes the teachers say super minor “swear words” (usually the c word that isn't really a swear word but scratch filters it anyway). It's not that people think it's cool, it's that it makes things seem more informal or offensive

My school's ICT is awful. Everyone got a low grade on the test because the teacher who marked it got a load of questions wrong (e.g. she thinks that two people can't have the same password on a website)

That is horrifying. At our school, it is normal behavior for your computer to lag at startup, but a lagging keyboard is unheard of!

I'd hate to be at your school.

And Scratch isn't blocked for being inappropriate - it's not blocked at all. Neither is the Wiki.

Anime websites? I would guess that they would be blocked at my school. Anyways, I have heard mild swears from teachers a few times per year, but the students do it so much, it's like a religion to swear X times every class and in lunch.

(Googles ICT) - Wow. You must have a very bad class. Now tell her that two people can have the same PIN number. That will shock her.

What Zeusking said. Seriously, if you tell me more incorrect stuff she says I will literally contact the school and complain. I have heard of some old-school CS teachers saying that a 4Ghz quad-core CPU runs each core at 1Ghz, which is false, because each core is 4Ghz and the simultaneous thread calculation is what increases the performance.

Our computers run Windows 7 with Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome.

They take 30 minutes to boot (I'm not kidding here. The teachers come to school early to boot the computers so they will be ready when class starts.)

What I can do on them: lots of trolls. One plug to turn off all of the internet in one room.

Also, I got into a debate that took half the class period (an hour) with our computers teachers about why we should use Chrome as default. It ended in Chrome being installed on the computers the next school year but he still “highly recommended” that students use IE.
