Broken Oaths notes on character creation.
Alright. It is about time to make some much needed specific notes on the Broken Oaths world.
There have been a fair few characters who break minute rules, or just aren't very logical and this is built to prevent that.
Character Creation
As noted in the studio, there are three main roles a character can partake in, a mortal, a demon or a god. Demons mostly function as npc’s for the sake of them just being the equivalent of underpowered tormented mortals who have had the magic sucked from them. Mortals are the primary character source for new members, and are the only rank you can (theoretically) have as many as you'd like. Mortals are characters who are seen as toys and followers for the gods, and things to torment for the demons. And of course the gods, beings made of pure magic who represent the forces in the world.
There are of course other more minute roles we will go over below.
In detail ;
- Mortals
Beings who live numbered years (up to about 120, give or take(they would live longer in a more technically advanced time period)) and can fairly easily be killed. Most mortals work farmland or other simple jobs. There are few established mortal settlements and in recent years many have been destroyed by a few minor frustrated gods, and rampages and attacks by the demon Horizon.
Gender functions - mortal gender works the same as human, two sexes, male and female and near infinite gender identities. And of course, only amab and afab can mate and have children.
Death - many things can kill a mortal, most common being illness. Other things such as old age cancer etc, anything that could kill a human could kill a mortal. And of course, injury can kill them, whether it be from a god, demon or fellow mortal.
Design - drakes are the most common mortal forum, though winged dragons, wyrms, and other intelligent animals do exist. A mortal can look like just about anything, though certain traits may be asked to be changed or removed. Any part of their design that has a magical connection (mane of water, fire hair, ghostly wings, etc) will need an explanation to be accepted.
Connection to magic - mortals have a small connection to magic on their own, but there are a few skilled self taught witches. Beyond that, blessings from gods or oaths to major demons might also give them magic, though you would need perms from the god/demon's owner and a mod to get such powers for a mortal. Weak connection to magic is rare and a permission only role for mortals.
Recommended archetypes - salesperson, farmer, wanderer, soldier, child, elder, petty criminal.
Do not make your character a - cereal killer, demon hunter.
Sub roles -
. Demigod. Permission only role, the child of a god and mortal, they are rarely immortal and have a strong connection to magic. They also do often have extended lifetimes. (prize/perms only.)
. Oath bearer. A mortal with a lifelong oath of service to a god or demon in return for power or immortality. Often used as a curse inflicted by demons on a mortal by a clever way of breaking an oath. (prize/perms only)
. witch. By oath or by years upon years of tutoring and practice a deepened connection has been made between a mortal and magic, giving them the capability to bend magic to their will and cast minor spells (prize/perms only.)
. Immortal. Blessed by a god or demon with immortality without an oath. Though they cannot be killed by any means, they simply live and never die. (prize/perms only.)
- Demons
Dead mortals or gods to be *. Did something considered unforgivable in the past that can be very specific and petty. They are beings entirely devoid of magic that are often stuck in hell for eternity. They play a minor role in the story. For a demon to travel to the overworld requires mod perms (for the sake of the fact that the character would need permission from the rulers of the underworld (Arcturus and Seniki) and a valid reason to leave.) Demons despise the gods and often try to rebel against their godly rulers.
Gender functions - same as mortals, though in death if a character did not identify as their birth gender they may actually be physically closer to said gender, if they are lucky.
Death - even though demons are already dead, they can be killed again on the mortal realm and sent back to hell which keeps them down until they can get a new body formed or gifted to them by one of the godly rulers of the underworld.
Design - same as mortals, though for minor demons (Major are prize/perms only) require forward facing horns that formed after death, and visible reason for why they died, though it may become abstract in death. For example a demon that died of the plague, they might have permanent black boils or smth. Any wound from death constantly hurts and has no way to be healed (even with goldy intervention.) Demons will appear the same as their past mortal body in every other function, though slight palette changes such as increased or decreased saturation or making the colors a bit redder.
Connection to magic - none. Most demons have absolute zero connection to magic. Only major demons who had strong connection to magic in their past (oathbearer (to a god only), witch, demigod, god, etc.) and become major demons will have any use of magic and it will be far less than they had in life. depending on some certain things (talk to a manager) it could be increased but it is rare and requires blessings or oaths. However demons can all cast oaths.
Recommended archetypes - fraud committer, petty thief, connection to demons in life, killed/injured one person, kind person who doesn't know what they did wrong (was raised to worship the ‘wrong’ god? Follower of the eye in life? Oblivious capitalist? Rich kid?) angry abused kid? Hurt themself purposefully? Slave owner?
Do not make your character a - mass murderer, spoofy character, magical being, a child (depends, most would be forgiven. ask)
Sub roles -
. major demon. A dead witch, demigod or god. A demon who still has connection to magic. (prize/perms only.)
. high follower of the eye. One of the original cultists of Seek, and one of the first *. Technically never died, has no injury from death, pristine scales and no scars after death. (prize/perms only.)
. dream stalker. Demon with the power to torment mortals' dreams. Often have a decent relationship with Daruont.
- Gods
Known as the most powerful beings of the realm.gods represent aspects of the world, physical or mental. Things such as the force of love, rain or even simply evergreen trees. Many gods to love and care for mortals, but the council, the beings that rule the realms, could hardly be bothered to care for the mortals, specifically when a war is running. There are a few domains of gods, most notably the old gods, the council of the land, the sea gods, the earth gods and a few other domains.
Gender functions - gods have no gender. They can mate with any gender (and any role) no matter how they identify.
Death - gods are not afflicted by old age or non magical illness. The only way they can die is by being killed. Often by other gods or by powerful demons. Most gods become demons as in their long lives they do at least one thing damnable.
Design - gods can look like anything, though their appearance should at least hint at what they represent.
Do and do not - go wild with gods, though they are all reserved and you cannot simply make one anymore. They can have pretty much any personality or role, though many are quite arrogant.
Sub roles -
. godling. The child of two gods who doesn't represent anything in specific. Just a simple being who lives with immense magic and an indefinite lifespan. (prize/perms only.)
. old god. One of the first gods from the time of the old council. Rare in current times as many were killed in the time of the seek and timestone wars, or have simply gone dormant. (prize/perms only.)
. council member. Rulers of the gods. Fluxuates pretty often in times of war as council members are key targets for demons and other godly groups. (reserved role. Manager only)
Other notes on character creation
10 characters per person. Exceptions can be made for things such as competitions.
Only mortals are free to make. Demons are perms only and Gods are going to mostly be given as prizes for the sake of minimizing powerplaying.
Please create diverse characters. Go out of your comfort zone. If you're used to playing bubbly teens, then make a grumpy 60 year old. You play angsty villain characters? Play a nervous kind bean. If a mod finds a character to be to a bit stereotypical (in whole or among the roleplay.), they may ask you to change it.
