“Lily, wait!”
A young girl in a cloak ran through the cold, harsh woods.
“Lily! Please wait up, it didn't mean anything-”
“No!“ Lily shouted, tearing through each stride. James ran after her, his hand almost catching onto her cloak.
”I swear,“ pleaded the boy. ”It's all a mistake! They wouldn't have-“
The girl stopped and turned around with a dramatic swish of her cloak. James skidded to a stop, immediately retracing his steps slowly as Lily advanced on him.
”You and your little friends are all worth a trip to hell!”
“Lily-”
“None of you have ever made a single good choice- I don't even know why I talk to you!”
“Lily, I-”
“Your glorious schemes, your clever pranks! And you never turn around and see the damage you've caused-” she stopped talking and flinched. James took her hand firmly. Lily stared at it, tears forming rapidly at her eyes.
“Lily,” tried James.
Lily looked away and shut her eyes. A small drop of salty water ran down her cheek.
James smirked. “Are you… crying?”
“Quit it, James,” Lily swore softly.
“You're adorable when you're angry,” James said, tilting his head to match hers.
Lily slowly turned back to look at him, shaking her head. Her tears streamed down her face, glowing in the darkness of the woods.
She whispered, “You've never been called a Mudblood, have you?” The corners of her lips were down, her lower lip trembling. Her hands curled into fists, shaking off James's grip. “You've never been called a name?”
James looked down at his feet, cloak hanging to his ankles.
“Barely a harsh word has come your way, has it? You Pure-Bloods and your flawless fantasies. Ever care for others? Better off a Death Eater.” She scorned, looking away once more and taking a step back.
“Look,” James began. “There's nothing I-” he choked.
Lily quickly looked at him with an expression of concern.
James knit his eyebrows. “I've got nothing. I would never want to hurt you, Evans.”
Lily scoffed.
“Promise. Nothing makes me happier in the world than you.”
“Not even your ego?” Lily retaliated.
James shook his head. Lily sighed a long sigh in pity.
“You really are something, Potter.”
James chuckled and stooped to her height, looking up slightly. “I'm pretty sure…you like me….” He waited for a response.
Lily gave him one. “I despise you,” she grinned down into his imploring face.
James laughed, taking her gently by the shoulders. He stared into her eyes intensely, tilting his head in awe. “Your eyes are a beautiful deep bottle green, Lily.”
“Oh, do stop,” Lily shrugged him off and grinned, taking a moment to clear her face of her tears.
Thumping footsteps sounded from the edge of the woods, pattering quickly toward them.
"James!“ Voices called. ”Prongs!
This place gives me the creeps. I swear it was daytime a minutes earlier.
Why did you think it was a good idea to come here? It's the Forbidden Forest!
Come now, we all know James loves the forbidden stuff.“ Laughter was heard.
”Oh dear, stay here, I've got it,“ James said to Lily.
”Wait,“ she commanded, touching his arm.
”Don't ever tell anyone about this, Potter.“
James chuckled, walking backwards with a broad smile on his face. ”Cross my heart and hope to die."

Part 1: Character Inspiration
Words: 421/200

Song: cardigan (long pond studio sessions)

Prominent lyrics: Vintage tee, brand new phone
A friend to all is a friend to none
Chase two girls, lose the one
But I knew you
You put me on and said I was your favorite
When you are young, they assume you know nothing
(I couldn't help myself in picking them!)

Prose:
Three months ago at the university
I discovered you (or you discovered me) perhaps.
I remember glancing from far away, catching wide-eyed looks and sandy eyes.
Soon me and you (or you and me) became we.
It all happened so fast, but I barely missed a beat.

two months ago

“Do you want to the movies tonight?” I asked politely again.
For four weeks now we've been together. Late nights under street lights, dancing in the rain, jacket weather. Four weeks of beautiful bliss, in a daze of romance and vintage photos.
He jerked out of his gaze on the park bench and faced me, eyes adjusting to the warm evening light.
“I'm sorry,” he said, eyes shifting. “I- I can't.”
“Are you sure? It's the premiere, you don't want to miss it,” I smiled.
He looked down at the wooden bench bars, warped from rain and sun. “Yeah,” he gave a tight laugh. “There's just something I have to do.”
“Aww, what?”
He sighed for a moment and scratched his head. But he still wouldn't answer.
“Liam?”
He looked up.
“Is there something you want to tell me?”
“Actually…” he cocked his head. “No. It's fine.”
I sighed and smiled. “Go get a good night's rest then.”

three weeks ago

“Hey, you wanna go get coffee in the morning?”
“Yeah, sure, let me just check my schedule.” He pulled out his phone and set it on the table.
“History professor still?” I laughed, looking at his email.
He chuckled and scrolled to his calendar. “It's getting a little hectic.”
It was the third dinner hour on the campus. I don't usually go this late, but at least I found Liam sitting at a table, and ran over, happy to see him.
“Surely there could be one minute or so to spare from your schedule?” I joked.
“Hyeah, I just-” a notification turned up on his screen. The contact had hearts and a lock, but that was all I'd see as he quickly grabbed the phone off the table.
“What's that?” I asked.
“Mom,” he said. “Just a sec.”
I tilted my head, as he received the call and got up.

one week ago

He said I wasn't the right fit, and took me off.

now

Was I too small, too young, big, and old?
Worn, torn, shiny, bold?
Were my buttons not clicking?
My collar too tight?
Maybe I'm just something to be enticed with.
Only for the moment just right?
(Do you remember when you said I was priceless?)

Part 2: Character Sheet
Words: 134/100

Name: Julia ‘Ju(les)’ Carlton
Pronouns: she/her
Sexuality: straight
Species: human
Strengths: loyal, trustworthy, honest, smart
Weaknesses: gullible, anxious, naive
Looks: fair brown hair, hooded eyes, light eyelids, pink makeup, beautiful cupid's bow, lips turned up. Never one for showy outfits, a humble covering dress in the summer, jackets in spring and winter, and flannels in fall.
Personality: Julia is really smart in terms of academics, however lacks in real-world experience, especially negative ones. She's sort of carefree, but makes sure she stays on the beaten path and thrives on it. She's a hopeful romantic, only just getting a touch of real-life relationships.
Tendencies: Julia tends to go with the flow, never really a trailblazer. She often relies on her friends and others to make a schedule for her, but does take initiative when necessary.

Part 3: Character Motivations
Words: 391/450

Scenario 1: 253/150 words
Julia in class
“Class,” Julia's physics professor paced the lecture floor. “I am both very shocked and unscathed at the results of this test.” He paused for a moment of suspense.
It was only the third week into semester one and Julia already had her favorite teacher. A french older gentleman,Mr. Lafayette was both upfront and impromptu. Only last week did Mr. Lafayette give out a test full of a hundred unexpected questions to assess his new class. The students had the weekend one two days to finish and turn in their answers.
“I saw a few unfinished tests, not to be frowned upon, knowing this was a rather abrupt way to start a semester. However my goal was to assess the readiness of my new class, and that I have most certainly attained the information to do so. The rest of you, have showed great persistence. I have no doubt the dorm mothers spent the night telling you off for the lights.”
This gathered a laugh from the students.
“I want to get to the point here. The highest score here with thirty-seven percent accuracy is… Ms. Carlton, please wave your hand.”
Students clapped awkwardly and looked around, and Julia waved timidly.
“Yes, yes, good. Thirty-seven percent accuracy. With the advanced level questions I gave you, I am impressed. Most of these questions I gave are questions you all will know the answers to at the end of semester. By January you should be able to ace this test.”
Students ‘oohed’.
“Now, to the board.”

Scenario 2: 241/150 words
(Julia gets to class)
Tuesday morning twelve minutes before her second english lecture of the year, Julia makes her way through the food laden breakfast tables. Backpack behind her, classroom somewhere in front, she walks with the flow of the college students.
“Where am I going…” Julia pulls out a map of the campus from her outside backpack pocket.
“Oh, there's so much,” she said, looking up and down the paper and looking around. “I need-”
“Help?” a voice next to her asked.
“Gem!” Julia exclaimed. She hugged her friend.
“That's me! And I know where you need to go.” Gem took the map, folded it, and gave it back.
Julia took it and put it back in her pocket. “Thank you so much, I was so lost-”
“And you still are, as long as we're standing here! Let's get going.” She began to walk, and Julia hurried up to follow her. “You're in the main building here, cafeteria three. Where do you need to go?”
“Um…” Julia referred to her mind. “Classroom number 2536.”
“Nice. You're in luck. It's a short walk. To get to the east wing - where your class is - keep walking this way until you get to the mural of fruit. From there, all you need to do is turn to the left and look on the right side of the corridor. Find 2536 and you're good.”
“Thanks, Gem,” Julia said in gratitude.
Gem patted her on the back. “Gotta go!”

Scenario 3: 156/150 words
(Julia's reaction to getting test scores)
“I think you'll do well,” Timothy said to a Julia in a nervous-wreck. “You've been amazing and failed every single quiz but all of them.” He paused. “That sounded- a bit odd but, you know, I know you'll do great.”
“Thank you,” Julia whispered.
Timothy Eorl was Julia's seatmate in this class. They had become fast friends and study mates over the course of just a week, sitting together every time.
Last week the Creative Writing II class spent all of class working on their answers for the end of semester exams. Handed in then, today was the day the scores came out. The anxiety of the students getting their results hung around the classroom, inching into every one of them.
Half an hour later of the class working in silent suspense, Mrs. Sterling called the class to attention.
Julia and Timothy leaned over their desks, and every eye was on the old teacher with glasses.

Part 4: Expanded Scenario
509/500 words. (Expanding on scenario 3)
“It's that time,” Mrs. Sterling said.
Julia shifted in her chair, her knees beginning to knock together. “Oh, no, this is-”
“Going to go great. We haven't even gotten the scores yet,” said Timothy. “Just sit tight, it'll be all right.”
“When I call your name, come down and grab your papers,” their teacher announced. “Albertson, Jack….Attery, Zoe…Alps, Tiffany!”
Three people walked down in succession with poker faces on. It was a small tight-knit class, and Julia gathered that Mrs. Sterling was calling names by alphabetical order. It was only a matter of seconds before her name would be called.
…Alston, Sarah…Bach, Paul… Her mind spun. …Bates, Beatrice…Betts, Moby…
“Carlton, Julia!”
Timothy nudged her eagerly, but Julia's knees were locked cold and she gave Timothy a scared look. Timothy looked at her expectantly, giving her his warm comforting gaze, and put his hand on hers. Julia closed her eyes and calmed herself, then got up.
“Thanks,” she whispered in gratitude to Timothy. He nodded. Then Julia moved swiftly to join the quickly moving line of students going to the front of the classroom.
…Calahan, Minny…Davis, Patricia…Eaton, Nilton
Sooner than later she approached the teacher's desk and found her sheet.
She barely looked past her name on the paper, going back to her seat hurriedly. She almost sat down when Timothy's name was called, and he joined the line as well.
…Evans, Edward…Gray, Ishan…
Julia stared at her paper, the top page only revealing the exam name and her name in cursive font. Surely I couldn't have gotten anything right, she thought worriedly. Even though Julia aced practically every pop quiz and writing assignment, this was an exam. The test of all tests. She couldn't bear to see her results.
“Hey,” Timothy said, sitting down. He looked excited, and looked at her papers. “What did you get?”
Julia stared forward. “I don't know- I can't look at it.”
Timothy knitted his eyebrows. “Let me just-” he peeked under the top page and raised his eyebrows. The tiniest of a grin turned up one his lips, and he eyes looked relieved.
…Grant, Graham…Ramsay, James…
“I mean- it doesn't hurt to see…” he implied. “You did your best.” He maintained an ameteur poker face.
It was Julia's turn to raise her eyebrows. “What if it's bad? I'd rather be swallowed by a whale than know I did badly.”
Timothy chuckled. "Just look. I promise it's not bad."
He flipped the page over halfway and looked at Julia. She eyed him apprehensively, squinting her eyes.
…Zimmer, Ivan.
The page flew open. Her score, One hundred percent, written in neat handwriting.
“Yes!” Julia exclaimed in whisper, throwing her hands in the air, high-fiving Timothy. “Wow, this is amazing!”
“You did it,” Timothy said, displaying silent cheering. “I knew you could.”
Julia smiled appreciatively. “What did you get?” she asked.
Timothy's face fell quick. “Oh, well…”
“What?” Julia scrambled for his result papers, looking at them. Immediately she looked back up. “Timothy!”
He smiled again.
“You trickster,” she laughed.
In red ink: One hundred percent.

Dear Future Raya,
Know that you're loved, in good hands, and in your perfect place. Keep reaching for the stars, and go even further! Here are a few things to spark your memory: the ultimate warm-up, jj, sandwiches, eating at 10, bus rides, away games, bathroom runs, back pain, parades, enchiladas, the cadence, covering down.
All about the looks! Past Raya (this means start of November!) has mid length hair with freshly cut curtain bangs. Remember I did it a few days ago on the go without permission, haha. On your left wrist are three hair ties, the red bracelet from summer camp ‘22, and a red Chinese knot bracelet. On your right wrist is a round hair tie, a regular one, a thick tan glittery sparkly hair tie for show, and the blue and white bracelet from summer camp ’23. You haven't worn anklets for a long time. You've also been wearing black a lot since it's Halloween.
Your costume was Dark Rey from Star Wars, but someone on the streets mistook you for Kylo Ren! Your sister went as classic Rey, and everyone knew who she was of course. Your sister went as the Mandolorian, with way too many things hanging from his outfit! There were many houses you went to, so much candy, and big bars of chocolate and Starburst.
At senior jazz today you ate two of those Starburst: a red one and orange. They tasted like the flavors orange and strawberry, which are pretty probable. In one of the songs you have a lot of piano stuff, solos around every corner in Count Basie style. Light and airy.
From Olivia's GUTS album, your favorites are all-american b, balled of a homeschooled girl, and teenage dream. You're starting to like love is embarrassing more as well! The others you're not so crazy about. SOUR is still amazing!
You're attempting to learn drumset to sit in sometimes in the middle school jazz band. It's going okay, but you haven't had enough time to practice! On the other hand, your snare progress is progressing a lot! Your practices before marching rehearsals are so helpful and fun.
You're doing amazing.
~ Raya <3

nov. 1 (intro) | 59 words
helloo! im Shea (from script), any pronouns except he/him. this is my first session of swc (though i have been in src, sac and ca :3) i am a avid fan of ajr and digital artist! goals: complete atleast 5 more chapters of this story for my friends, reach my word goal, and do a lot of dailies.

nov. 5 (word war with @silverlynx-) | 158 words
“look at that pretty robin on the tree!” Enver said, they pointed at the robin. Landon walked to the tree and looked up. the cold autumn wind breezed through his hair, he then smiles. “yeah. it is pretty.” leaves crunched beneath the twos feet, as they walked through the forest, to explore it. before walking, Landon snapped a picture of the robin on his polaroid. they took pictures at the various trees, old looking or new with leaves still attached to branches, animals they see, birds mostly. Enver climbed up a tree to get a better view of above, they had the polaroid and they were snapping pictures of the sunset. “are you done yet?” Landon yells, starting to shiver a bit from the cold. “oh! yeah, i am.” Enver says, they then slide down the tree. “let’s go home, i feel super cold..” Landon says, Enver nods and smiles, taking Landon’s hand, and leading him back home.

swc megathread ☾ november 2023

Daily Nov. 2, 388 words

Dear Future Me,

I hope you’re doing well, because you’re me. Just, in the future. All grown-up and stuff.
I hope you’ve achieved something worthwhile, and are satisfied with your current situation. I definitely hope you have a job and a house, and haven’t committed any crimes. Or have been convicted of any. That would be bad too.
This SWC session my goal is to complete a majority of dailies, and maybe a couple of weeklies. I also want to reach my word goal of five thousand words, which I should be able to - as long as I stay determined and focused. And that…might be hard. But I’ll do it. I’ll make sure of it.
Anyway, the current writing project I’m working on is a book titled “Project S”. It’s about a boy named Asher who spends the first thirteen years of his life in a simulation, and has to deal with the aftermath of being freed from it - at least, for the first half of the book. At the end of the first half, Asher learns that what he is sure is real life is actually also a simulation. Along with his triplets, Trevor and Gia, he is shoved into true reality - an Earth that has been conquered by aliens , with humans trapped in inhumane conditions.
To save his fellow human beings, Asher and his triplets must team up with a ragtag team of aliens to convince the alien empress that humans are, in fact, intelligent beings worth treating as equals.
It’s been pretty fun to work on, and I want to finish it. Eventually. Like hitting my word goal, it’ll be pretty hard to do, but possible - and worth it.
I hope you don’t look back on this session of SWC with regret for not participating enough, or anything like it. I’ll try to avoid making you feel like that. If I fail, though…blame school. Always blame the American School System for all of your problems, even when it’s not warranted or reasonable.
On second thought, don’t do that. It’s great that we are able to obtain an education, given that a lot of people in other countries and the like can’t - even if they want to. Not that the U.S. can’t improve. It definitely can.
Anyway, that’s it for now.

Sincerely, Your Past Self.

Daily #2

Dear future me,
I hope you’re doing well.
Life’s good right now but you probably know that. Heh.
I’m hoping to complete my goals for this camp, as I always seem to lose motivation halfway through. Did you manage it? I sure hope so.
The word goal isn’t that bad I think, it seems easy enough. If you manage to remember to log your words of course. Heh.
And the last goal: make friends. I hope you made at least one.
I also hope that all you did this month was fun, as I know we can sorta complain just a little bit. (Or a lotta bit.)
How much progress have you made on our comic and novel; I hope you made some. (Secretly a lot.) And I assume that it was a tad bit frustrating since a) we procrastinate a lot, and b) we also easily run out of ideas (and motivation woo.)
Also, if you couldn’t tell, we’re really bad at writing formal letters. Or anything formal really.
Also, also, have you gotten better at outlining yet, because currently I’m super bad at it, like comically bad at it. I hope you did (I’ve said the phrase, “I hope” at lot as well.)
ANd since it’s going to be December at the end of camp, I hope you’ll have a good Christmas and also Thanksgiving.
And I also hope you have a fun time just existing and taking in the little things, since I know sometimes, we both miss those things. Especially when we’re both extremely busy pretty much all the time.
Plus, I hope that you have lots of writing ideas and motivation throughout the whole of scratch writing camp, December and next year.
Once again, I’m still saying “I hope” a lot, but that’s okay, but I do hope, a lot, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing at all.
And last of all, I hope the rest of your year is good. As well as the one after that, and that you have a good year with your friends, new and old.
With lots of love,
Bea

nov 2.

dear future self,
should you ever find yourself stumbling across this letter, you should go do your homework. it's crucial to your future, don't you think? if you discover this on one of those rare occasions when you've actually finished your work, continue reading. this is a rather silly (you never liked the word silly. it was just a bit too silly for you) opening to a letter. i hope you will forgive me.
how are you? i, of course, hope that you're doing well. doing well, in fact, is a somewhat vague phrase; i will not specify because i am feeling rather fatigued at the moment.
i am doing alright at the moment, although i am in the presence of severe disagreements between two of your colleagues. i say colleague for lack of a better word. or dare i say, want of a better word. i am looking forward to this month of november, as there are some interesting (i would even say fun) things happening during. school is fine, although i would prefer companionship; it was rather difficult being a new student without any friends.
i do hope you're having a pleasant life at the moment. is your education going well? i would be rather disappointed if you had a gpa of less than 4.0. of course, my expectations may change in the future, although i hope it will not lower. you were always a vaguely ambitious person.
in the case that you are not having the best day, i offer my condolences and hopes that it will improve. things always get better, am i right?
(not always, i don't think. but it is good to have an optimistic outlook, no?)
currently, the song “clean” by taylor swift is taking residence in my brain. specifically, the line “i screamed so loud but no one heard a thing”. do you still like taylor swift? what about boywithuke? i'd be rather upset if you do not, for the latter. what about other things? what books do you like? what subjects do you like? do you have friends? there are many things i'd like to know about you.
you may have noticed the pretentious tone of this letter; fear not, you were not actually intelligent and smart-sounding during your early years. this is just your younger self attempting to seem better than what you actually were. however, your (former self's) purpose has been revealed, so that wouldn't really work, would it?
(writing semi-formally, surprisingly, comes fairly naturally to me; do you remember?)
regards
(you always ended your emails with regards. do you do that still?)

song: eyes open
“close your eyes”, he says.
why? you ask.
“i don't want you to see what's going to happen.” his freezing hand slips over your eyes.
there's a sickening sound. you try not to think. you're afraid what you're thinking is right.
his hand falls away from your face. you try to catch a glimpse of the blurry figure lying there in the red (fruit juice?), but he ushers you away.
are we playing soldiers? you ask. your breath comes out in puffs of smoke. he doesn't answer for a long time.
“yes, we're playing soldiers.”
are we winning?
“i hope we are.”
you hope for a lot of things, but you don't really know if it's enough.
you stumble along as he treads through the snow. (he's walking faster than usual. he usually slows down to let you catch up.)
are we really playing soldiers?
“we are,” his voice is so soft you wonder if the wind will blow it away. you also wonder if he believes what he's saying.
where are we going?
“people are waiting.”
are they coming to get us? you don't understand.
“no,” he turns to you and crouches down. (you think it's kind of stupid. you're only five inches or so shorter than him.) “no one's coming to save us now.”

swc megathread ☾ november 2023

Dear future self,

It’s Thursday, the second day of November and of SWC. You’ve just had to drag your dog off the couch after she decided she would go investigate an insect flying noisily into the window. She’s been put outside. She’s barking at something.
Right now, you’re also sick with covid. Despite your symptoms, you went to school this morning for the NCEA exam. I assume you won’t yet have the results back yet, as it’s an external and all, but I hope you – I? we? this is too much for my covid brain – did well enough.
Earlier, you were working on a card magic performance for a certain person’s birthday, which will have passed by the time you read this. I’m hoping it goes well, and that you get good reactions. You’re hoping that you can manage that one tricky move you’ve been trying – and failing – all afternoon. You’re hoping that with a new card box, it’ll be a lot easier – it better be, otherwise you don’t know what you’re doing wrong. I hope that in the future, you figured that all out long ago.
You’re also tired after the last few weeks of schoolwork. The frenzy of assessments has finally quieted down, but it’s worn you out. You haven’t been marked for much of it yet – you hope you have those results by the end of the session. You hope that in the future, school isn’t quite as stressful, and that term four is reasonably relaxing and enjoyable.
At the moment, you’re feeling… apprehensive, you could say, about an entry for the SWC writing competition. The session’s started and you haven’t yet planned anything. You desperately hope you don’t have to rush a piece you’re not proud of, like you did back in March. You hope that when you begin planning, you’re not out of ideas after writing more than usual. After all, you didn’t want July’s SWC session to end – so it didn’t. You kept writing various passion projects, competition entries, a certain amount of words every day, all through August. You tried to have a break in September, but school, of course, had other ideas. October was spent finishing up September’s schoolwork and trying so hard to relax that you didn’t end up relaxing at all. You’ve been constantly on-the-go since May, and you’re wondering if that’ll impact your writing or motivation. There’s only so long you can go for before you run out of fuel.
In the future, I hope you’re doing okay. I can’t help but wonder if you’re sitting there laughing because you know that things are only going to get much, much worse from here. I’m worried, because I don’t know just how bad things are going to get. I’ve grown used to things getting worse and worse and worse. That’s a bad thing, right? But maybe it could protect me. The positive side of pessimism is that you’re either right, or pleasantly surprised. And I can’t afford to let myself down, so I’m not going to let myself hope on this.
But we have to end on a good note. You’re looking forward to SWC, of course, to fantasy’s storyline and to being able to explore creative writing again after having to do so much formal writing for school. You’re looking forward to finishing your short story collection, although that probably won’t happen this month. You’re hoping to improve your horse riding, and you’re looking forward to your end of year musical theatre show. And although many of those aren’t happening in November, you’ll be one month closer to them by the end of the session. I hope that makes you happy, but I hope you’ll be sad to see November go. I hope you don’t get too stressed, that you’ve enjoyed yourself this month, and that you’ve relaxed and had fun – you deserve it, don’t forget that. You don’t have to keep going until the fuel runs dry.

Sincerely,
your past self <3

⚓︎┊NOVEMBER 2 DAILY
“Welcome to the second daily of this session! Hope you're enjoying discovering what your cabin and storyline look like. In this activity, you'll be writing a letter to your future self. Mention any goals you have for this month, maybe talk about a writing project of yours? Anything you want to include is great :) We'll be opening these letters near the end of the session.”

⚓︎┊AUTHOR'S NOTES
✦ word count: 604
✦ this is probably a bit scattered, but that's alright !!

Hey future self!

How are you doing? I hope you're drinking lots of water and doing your homework. Make sure to return any possible school notes as well. If you're procrastinating on something, get up and just do it. You'll save yourself a lot of time later. If you haven't updated your to-do list in a while, maybe it's the time to do so.

These were my goals for this November's session:
1. Be at least somewhat close to completing NaNoWriMo.
2. Do more dailies than last session.
3. Balance work and writing.

Have you completed them? I hope you have.

How's my NaNoWriMo project going? Have you reached your word count goal yet? Did you make any exciting plot discoveries? Are you proud of your work or regretting ever having written it? Currently, by the time I'm writing this, I have around 1,000 words. How far did you make it?

Don't beat yourself up if you haven't achieved any goals. At the end of the day, as long as you're breathing, existing, and at least trying to some degree, you're doing a-ok. Don't stress about any awkward interactions you may have had too. Conversations can be difficult, it's alright.

I'm writing this after coming home from school on a Tuesday afternoon. I'm listening to a playlist right now, so that might slightly affect my writing style and what I say haha. The playlist is themed on stars and galaxies. Do you still enjoy learning about space?

My media interests while I'm writing this are Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure, Six Minutes and Cookie Run. Do you still like watching, listening and playing those things? Or have you found other interests that you enjoy? I wonder what those interests are. I hope the interests make you feel happy! If not, maybe it's time to search around for something new.

By the time you're reading this, Christmas is soon. Are you excited? Have you given that list to your parents yet? What books do you think you'll receive? Will there be any visitors?

How's your social life going? Do you still shy away or are you more confident? Have you made any new friends? Friends are the people you choose to surround yourself with. Remember, it's okay to say “no” if something makes you uncomfortable. If someone says they don't mind or it's okay, they're likely telling the truth. You don't have to worry a lot.

Let me tell you a little something I learned today, in case you forgot it.

There are some things you can't control. Where you are, how other people react to you, what other people do, how things work, some of your emotions, the past and the future. It's okay. You don't need to try to take control of them. Just try letting go. It may be hard and it probably won't happen overnight, but just try. There are things that you can control, like most of your emotions, how you react to things, the decisions you make and the present. Don't fret about what happened or what will happen. When the time comes, you'll probably figure something out. You're smart. But for now, focus on the present. The present is all you have.

You might not have needed all these words I'm saying. You could be doing just fine, and that's great! Maybe you're mostly doing okay but you needed a positivity boost. Whatever happens, you'll be there to help yourself. You'll be there to tell yourself that everything is alright. You'll be there to be the friend that yourself needs.

Your emotions are valid.

Best wishes,
Your Past Self

November 2nd Daily

Dear Marbles,

Hello. Has things being going well at your place? If you wonder who I am, I am you. To be simple, I am your past self, writing to you this letter. Regarding how I done this does not matter, for I am very sure you knew that my friends helped me out in this matter but that's not the point of my writing. I know you are confused. Confused that which part of the past I am. I am the past of you at the start of the session in SWC November 2023. And I am here to ask you a few questions that are bugging me in my mind. What had I achieved? What had I failed? Which of the things I had desired had come true or not? I am not even sure if you will receive this letter, considering if I am still living in this world. But hopefully you will reply me questions you have the answer to. Did I achieved my sole purpose of joining SWC this session? Did I managed to snag a prize in the writing competition? Or at least an honorable mention? Or being able to have my writing shown in the results of the writing competition? This is my primary question. Still I have many to ask about my life jot in SWC, but in real life too. How's it been? How is my family? Had my relations with them finally mended together or shattered apart into countless glass pieces? I will have infinite questions to ask that it seemed impossible to answer all of it. Before I stop, I have to know, how's your state of health? Physical, mental, and emotional, all of it. Besides, if you are down with any of these, try joining TAG X. Remember animating helps to cheer you up. Hopefully we can win the competition of animating and writing. You are the only one who can answer me. So do not give up hope and continue to strive forward. Lastly I would like to give you a piece of advice: Do not continue living in your misery, instead try to view the positive side of this amazing world.

Your Past Self,
Marbles

Dearest Ena

I know that you will be distraught at the end of *insert show* but please. You will do so many more shows in your life. This was just a mere one. Please follow your dreams. One of my biggest fears in life is settling for ok. An ok partner. An ok job. An ok life. You can do better than that! You know that you want to perform. You’ve been doing that since you were two. It’s what you were born to do. So what if you don’t make that much money. You will live. What life is about is going above and beyond. Life is short. So live it to its fullest. You do pay attention in class (though that isn’t shown in your last science test results) you work hard. Harder than anyone that I know. Keep it up and your life will be a huge success. Don’t just think that you can do nothing and good will come your way, you need to work for it!

Ena, please never think that you aren’t pretty. Yes, fine some of your classmates are perfect, pretty, clever AND sporty but being pretty won’t get you anything other than a rich partner. And sporty won’t help either. Do you want to be an Olympian? I didn’t think so. There will always be someone out there who loves you. As a friend or a relative. If you’re lucky, you might even get a healthy relationship with a partner! If you’re lucky. But if you never find anyone, you’ll always have kind friends to help you through hard times. Oh! Do you still have a crush on blank. From sovereign? She will always be there for you. I honestly don’t care if she likes you back. She’s a shoulder to cry on. You can call her if times get tough. You can meet up! Go to the movies and get sick from the popcorn! Well, maybe not the sick bit. Your parents will always be there. I suppose, that’s my other fear. Being alone. In life. What happens if they both die? What do you do then? I think that you underestimate how good you are at making friends. But why listen to me? I’m just twelve-year-old you. Sitting in my bed. Listening to the rain on the window. It seems to never stop coming.

swc megathread ☾ november 2023

Dear Surf,
Today is November second, and when you are reading this, it will be the end of November, whether you like it or not. Unfortunately the weather is getting much colder, but maybe it will snow soon! How is your NaNoWriMo story progressing? Are you proud of where it’s taken you, or did you not work as hard on your planning and did the story get out of control? What aspects of the plot do you love, and which parts are you more unsure about? You should be proud of whatever you’ve written.
Since you’ve already fallen behind on your first day, don’t worry and just keep writing. You can definitely achieve your writing goal, just look how far your story has made it already! Is the draft finished by November, or does the story still have more to share? Because of a schedule mistake, you couldn’t take one of your electives, a creative writing class at school. You’re going to make up for that now.
I hope you’ve submitted a spooky story for the school writing competition too, don’t forget about that in the early days of November! Stay on top of schoolwork as well, and I hope you are excited for the next session of SWC and have written a lot this November.
Still, even if you don’t achieve your NaNo goal, you don't always have next year. As long as you went out and wrote, even if you fall short by a couple hundred words, you’ve done something, you’ve stepped up to the challenge. Yes, this is the first time in ages that you’ve written consistently. This is the time you’re going to write, you’re not putting it off another year in fear of what ways the adventure will take you. This is the opportunity; you’re seizing it as I write. This is the moment in which you can look back and tell yourself, “Wow, I actually wrote a novel,” or “Huh, I’ve really improved my writing.”
How’s Sci-Fi doing, did your cabin win? What were your favorite dailies and weeklies, and did you participate in any word wars? What did you learn from camp and what strategies are you now employing to improve your writing? I'm not really sure how this adventure is going to go, only that you are going to stick with this.
Happy writing,
Surf

swc megathread ☾ november 2023

2nd daily, 378 words.

Dear Future Taylor,
I am writing to you to ask a few questions, and to see how everything is going for you. My goals for this session of SWC were to improve my descriptive writing skills, and hopefully aim to write more in a given amount of time. I joined this session in preparation for my English exams, and hopefully you have fulfilled those goals. If you haven’t, then why not? What obstacles did you face? What could you have done better? I hope you didn’t procrastinate too much - you won’t have time to do that in your exams!
Aside from your exams, how has your writing been going? Have you been enjoying it? I also would kind of like to write as a hobby sometimes, because it can be a really useful tool to become better at explaining things and using words (something that I am not very good at in day-to-day life!). Writing in your spare time can also help to develop a more complex arsenal of vocabulary, which could possibly help me with learning languages? I hope that you have been enjoying your writing adventures, and I hope you will continue them after this SWC session.
Another thing that I planned to focus on this session was language practice. I have been particularly lazy with practicing my Ukrainian, and I have been meaning to do some writing for a while. I planned to do some of the dailies in Ukrainian or French for some practice, and to use SWC as an excuse for myself to do some writing. I have some French writing practice that I’d like to do for school, so I hope you have done some of that! Have you been practicing your Ukrainian this SWC? If not, why not? Try and practice language more, it will only speed up the learning process, and you will be closer to fluency faster.
How has the Mystery cabin been doing this session? Are you winning? Have you met your word count? I hope that you have contributed lots to your own word count, and to the cabin’s points by doing dailies and weeklies. I hope you have had a fun time during this SWC session, and met some of your goals!

2nd Daily. 214 words.

Hi…me I suppose,
How are you? Confused probably. This is weird, even for me.
I’m writing this from the beginning of November. I should probably say 2023 seeing as I have no idea when you’re going to get this. If you’re going to get this.
I am just writing to make sure I am well. That sounds a bit broad doesn’t it? I suppose it’s just to make sure I’m satisfied with myself. I have a couple of questions for you. Nothing particularly important but I just want to know.
How am I doing at…life?
I guess that is important but if you really are able to get this, that is all I want in return. An answer.
In less…philosophical matters, how is school? I hope you’re doing well, especially in that show that’s coming up. Loud voice, remember. And in those tests. Don’t worry, whatever happens you will be fine. It always turns out fine.
And before I go, one last thing. Look after yourself. Make sure you do.
Do what you love (which I hope is still writing) and love what you do.
Yours truly forever,
You
