Exceeding the Maximum Project Data Limit

Hello! Most of you probably know me as -TheDoctor-, but this is the alternate account I use for projects associated with the game I am currently working on called Creature. I have been developing this game for about nine months and it is now getting fairly close to completion. However, because the project is quite complex, I have reached the maximum project data limit. I have already condensed the sounds and most of the graphics to take up as little space as possible while still being high-quality. I have also attempted to download Creature and upload it into the offline Scratch editor, but that has the same data limit and thus changes nothing. I could divide the game into two separate projects, but I would rather not be forced to do that for continuity's sake.

If you have any suggestions concerning how to override the maximum data limit, I would be very appreciate.

Thank you!

Hmmm, I'm guessing the images are what's taking up all that room. Could someone remind me what the maximum file size for a Scratch project is? I believe it's 10 mb but I'm not too sure.

That game must be amazing! Anyway, I'm sure there's a wiki articles somewhere that says the limit.

I think 50mb for 2.0.

Download the project to your computer, finish it off using the offline editor, then go in a blank project, click upload from your computer, select the file then you should be able to share it. The offline editor requires Adobe Air.

Yes, the images are indeed what are taking up most of the data. Nearly all of the graphics were created in Photoshop and converted to vector in Inkscape to make them high-quality. The artwork is a major part of Creature, so I would rather not make them any less clear than they already are. A few others have posted that the maximum project size is 50 MB, but I have not yet confirmed that. Thank you for your post!

Thank you so much! I do not really need to know precisely what the limit is, but rather any ways to exceed it. I do not believe there are any articles on the subject. Thank you though!

Yes, I have actually already tried that method. Unfortunately, the offline editor has the same data limit that the online editor has, so I am still unable to add any new content. Thank you for the suggestion, though!

I'm afraid the style of Creature is made up of realistic textures, so using the pen tool would not be possible for this particular project. But thank you for the tip!

Check out some of Zro716's projects - the pen can be used to render extremely realistically! (in fact, just as precisely as any artwork that could be made - down to the scale of pixels)

Yes, I have seen pen-rendered projects and they are quite amazing! Thank you for the suggestion!

Update:

I just converted a few of the graphics to bitmap, which seems to have created quite a lot of extra room. Hopefully I will be able to find a few other sounds and graphics to simplify. Thank you so much for all of the tips!

Yeah, I'm afraid vector graphics of that complexity take up a LOT of room. Your best option would be to convert them all to high resolution bitmap images.

Yep, this is correct. The reason is that when you store a bitmap in a vector it gets converted into base64 encoding, which increases the total size by a factor of 4:3. Converting back to bitmap gives you back the extra ~33% space.

Will converting some textures into bitmap make the quality worse?

Yes indeed! Thank you for the info! Unfortunately, the pages are now rather difficult to read because of the quality. I suppose it will have to do, though!

Yes, unfortunately there is no way I can change that. It will still look great though!

Rather than using the convert to bitmap button, try taking a screenshot (prntscr on windows) of the vector image and importing it into Scratch. That way you only lose quality for fullscreen, but in normal screen size it still looks the same as the vector image.

EDIT: I wonder if there's some way to host the larger images in the server then edit the .json code of the project to load them on startup, not sure how exactly that would work and/or if the Scratch Team would allow it…
