My suggestion is that if you only want to make basic edits, you could use the web version of ClipChamp (from Microsoft).

Or Davinci Resolve, it's really good but it is proprietary. There is Kdenlive but I haven't figured it out yet as I haven't got any video projects to do.

Well, DaVinci Résolve is an amazing editor as stated above. There's a free version, and it's been used at Disney.
Alternatively, you can admit that China already owns all your data.
