this post is me watching marauders yt videos and dumping random info here

james, sirius, lily, and snape were in the compartment on the train in year 1 (this is when the whole conversation about gryffindor and all that happens)

lupin and peter were presumably in a compartment together as well

james was a chaser in the books but a seeker in the movies. i kind of like the idea of him and regulus facing off as seekers so maybe we can say he was both at various different times?

we need to be nicer to peter lol

they figured out lupin was a werewolf and planned to become animagi in their second year but it took them until their fifth year to succeed

this isn’t confirmed but it’s my guess that the time in which lily was there for lupin when no one else was is the time directly after the issue with sirius, james, and snape that almost resulted in snape’s death. because i can’t think of another time when the marauders would have had a falling out of any sort. however i can’t find any information on exactly when the incident took place

snape’s worst memory was after this apparently

sirius ran away from home between fifth and sixth year (we need him to bring regulus with him in our fanfiction)

sirius got his own place when he turned 17, with money his uncle left him

lily and james started dating in their seventh year

lupin was prefect and james was head boy

First question - when are we starting this fanfic time wise? At the very beginning, or somewhere in the middle and adding in backstory as we go? On one hand, the first year train compartment is an option for the beginning to have everyone get to know each other. On the other hand, we could start somewhere in the middle and add in parts from the beginning through flashbacks and memories as we go. Personally I think the second option would be trickier to write but more fun to read.

i think i want to start with year 1

just copying in what i said on luna’s profile

dumbledore and the schools system actually had the power to do something to get sirius and regulus away from their awful parents, and what happened was regulus was allowed to go to hogwarts a year early, and they'd be allowed to stay at Hogwarts over the summer but instead what happens is they start going to james'. tis allows regulus to be in the train compartment and be the fourth marauder instead of peter. if we get paige and rani both to join us, we can do this as the perspectives: sirius written by luna, james written by rani, lupin written by me, regulus written by stingray, and lily written by paige. I didn't even realize this but this arrangement matches up the two pairs of irl best friends in our group with the two pairs of best friends in the characters. if aqua wants to be involved we can add peter and make it so there's five marauders and also have him be a good person instead of… not a good person, but I honestly don't know whether they're a harry potter fan or not? also we have to be explicitly not transphobic in some way as well as fixing the problematic lycanthropy analogy and any other jkr-being-awful stuff that we can think of

Okay I've just read all this and now I have thoughts which I will most likely be bad at articulating. Here goes.

1. I already brought this up to soki, but could we treat severus better in this fic? I don't mean make him a really good person, but like… Basically when I first finished the series and discovered the truth about him, I was obsessed with him. I thought he was such a cool and interesting character, and how he did everything for love. But over time I realized he's actually not the best - like, he didn't do any of the good things he did because he actually thought they were right; he did them because of his strange obsession with a dead woman. So I'd like to make his motivations make more sense? I'd like him to be friends with Lily in a slightly less awful, hypocritical way. Their friendship can end with similar misunderstandings as in the books, but with him being less self-centered about it, and more confused and traumatized and influenced/corrupted by others.

2. are we going to write this in first or third person? past or present tense?

3. Soki, your idea about Regulus and everything is interesting, except would the school really have the ability to do anything about it /before/ Sirius and/or Regulus had attended Hogwarts? And I think it would interesting if Regulus still came a year after Sirius and there was still some tension between them after being put in different houses, and some feelings of abandonment on Regulus's part, maybe because Sirius finds an awesome group of friends, and maybe we could make it so Regulus doesn't. But we could resolve that earlier on, and have him join the friend group eventually.

Another thing is that if Sirius and Regulus are experiencing this abuse at home, would they be likely to tell anyone about it, at least earlier on? A lot of people in these situations are not. And in my mind, I think I've always thought that maybe Regulus didn't realize it was abuse, and thought all the bad things were just normal, maybe because he had an easier time fitting into it than Sirius did - and Sirius had a clearer view and knew his family wasn't normal. So, what if we have them reveal it later, to a particular teacher in the story or something, after which actions are taken by the school to help them?

4. I have some small pieces of writing about the marauders that we could possibly use as inspo if I can find them.

5. I agree with making it less problematic and prejudiced (obviously). Adding on to what Soki already said about that, lets try to actual add some good, well-researched representation of poc (which from what I've heard was done awfully in the books), be less euro-centric, and have representation of all different people and cultures in general. Like, I'd love to plop a Jewish character in there for some personal representation for me xD. All the books gave me was Anthony Goldstein, who is presumably Jewish based on his name, but does he even have any lines? And I barely know who he is.

6. In the marauders year in Gryffindor, do we know who all the students were? Boys were James, Sirius, Remus, and Peter. girls were at least Lily and Mary Macdonald, right? anyone else, canon or headcanon? because there had to be more.

yeah!! i've seen these things all over sithterest (do you know what i mean ahah) with like fan art of the marauders and their year in a yearbook - it's been awhile since i've had marauders content pop up but i can go hunt it down hehehe

what if, instead of a plotline, it’s more of a collection, and we write marauders fanfic for all or most of our dailies/weeklies? that’ll make it a lot easier on us.

That'd be cool. Though maybe still with an overall agreement on what we want to change from canon and not? And we could still each sort of go off of what the others have written thus far, too.
