Adding cursive to Scratch

I fully support adding cursive letters to Scratch! It would enhance projects with elegance and creativity, allowing for personalized greetings, handwritten notes, and more. Implementing various cursive fonts and customization options would make projects even more engaging and align with Scratch's educational focus. Let's advocate for this exciting addition!

To the OP:
I don’t know about this, I saw people talking that they can’t even read cursive, while some people like me, is taught cursive from the start of first grade. And you can always use a generator, or write it out yourself, writing with your hands or stylus is easy for those who know cursive, while people who use a mouse or doesn’t know cursive might find this pretty challenging. Cursive is not readable for everyone, and projects on Scratch are exposed to everyone. So I don’t think this is a really good idea.

You know Arabic Unicode characters do the same thing as cursive handwriting, right? Cursive will be even easier than the Arabic Language if you consider that the characters only change based on what's before and after them, while Arabic glyphs change depending on their position in the word.
As an example, here is the arabic letter Taa (ت)

Wow, 4 forms?! Yes. 4 forms based on its position. I don't think the isolated variant is used much, but it can still be used while referencing the letter ( I just did a few sentences ago hahah, silly me ).

Anyways, most arguments against this suggestion seem to be a flood of copium for not being able to read cursive. I believe that, if your school district wasn't focused on giving everyone a proper education, one's ignorance shouldn't be applied worldwide.
It infact seems like the deprecation of cursive is an American trend. While there are good intentions and motives to deprecate cursive handwriting in favour of more readable fonts, especially for students and in general people with learning disorders such as dyslexia, cursive can and does give an old, Illuminist aesthetic which may be pleasant to some.

Even I can barely read it. But I think OP wants cursive added so that way projects could look more professional.
If you want to look professional, use a Sans-Serif font. It's clean, and the majority of Scratch's user base can easily read it.

i am arabic and i totally agree that we should use cursive! it doesnt matter if people cant read it, they can just not use it. the choice still should be there for people who WANT cursive on their project.

Alright but, which cursive font?
Ignoring the fact that a lot of us here can't read cursive (including myself)
There's a lotta kinds of cursive, all with their varying degrees of goofyness and readability, i'm talkin ahout like fonts in computers that have some goofy names like “self deception”, good lord that sounds pretentious

1. Cursive is a common way of writing to some
2. Yes, this one I’ll have to agree. Though I can read it perfectly fine, some can’t
3. It isn’t I have to use it everyday in elementary school

I think they mean some kind of readable cursive font, not your own cursive.

I don't really know about you guys' opinion, but I disagree on this subject. I think cursive is not needed and the fonts in Scratch are already well enough. Also, you can create your own text engine using a cursive font! Lots of people in the Scratch community can't read cursive, so it is not the best font to be added.

REMEMBER, THIS IS MY OPINION, YOU CAN DISAGREE ON THIS!:D

So is the second suggestion in https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/646299/ yet you've seemed eager to propose it to the Scratch community.

RecessFailsOffical wrote:

No font will be able to replicate the old feeling from cursive. Also most fonts in Scratch are just horrible.

RecessFailsOffical wrote:

Many can't read cursive, and many more can't make a cursive text engine.

There are also 3 fonts made specifically for east asian languages ( Chinese, Korean, Japanese ) which are a small fraction of the Scratch userbase. Why those but not cursive?

I appreciate your input, but I have a genuine fondness for cursive fonts, and I believe they can work exceptionally well for thumbnails and projects with a more dramatic flair.

So far, I'm not sure what to say about this topic, but it's blowing my mind.

RecessFailsOffical wrote:

I accept your encouragement to disagree with this suggestion since it helps improve people's ideas for what to be added from scratch but to be fair to those who haven't learned cursive, I think people can learn cursive or try to write it if they do their best at it and to research more about the font. Not saying that this should be a priority for ST right now though, but something to consider since it would help some.

RecessFailOfficial wrote:

I know for sure that text engines are neat, but they can also be used for bad things if a person puts in something inappropriate or a word that doesn't follow the community guidelines.

Then that user would get their project report if they were to share it or make it public. Therefore, creating a massive snowball effect to start drama over a text engine.

Let's just say that if you didn't do that instead and wanted to create one, for example, say that I wanted to make a font in a project, but Scratch didn't have that available to use in the project's editor. Let's say that I would google what font I want to add and then import it into scratch. That was easy first off, but then the difficulty starts to challenge you. You have to create the text-based engine yourself, and not a lot of fonts will usually work if it's not the right size font of if it's a font that you can't read unless you have the right requirements of spacing, size, increments, etc.

Why is “They may not be able to read it” an issue? Think of it as another language, most kids can't speak Japanese if English is their first language.

Support because I see no issue.

Not to mention, there is a font in another language

But we should add cursive because some people want it and we can ask ST to make one that is easy to read for some people. Plus the fonts we already have are trash no offence, but we really need prettier fonts, and my first option is cursive. I think agree is stronger than disagree in this topic

Oh! Also, it could be slightly simplified cursive, so even then, kids could read it
