This was like from 2016 - 2018, but why did so many people put Xx_ in their username? I just deeply remember so many people doing this.

Jokes aside, it's a stylistic choice, believed to make the username look cool.

It's just a common cool part of a username. Like 101.

Also, if one person did it, (for example, someone who was famous), that would have encouraged others to do the same. Many people want to follow the current trends for different reasons: this was one of them.

But I remember this from before 2016??

A lot of popular individuals, such as rappers(Xxxtentacion) use it, they may love math, and an ungodly number of people wanna be directly edgy, rather than slipping in edgy humor they make the fact they're edgy their whole personality. Some people do it to pay respects to the old internet, a simpler time
However, kids will be kids, and people will be people, so it's up to their individual choice.

It's an aesthetic thing.

It is also popular among the scene kid community if I am not wrong ( I am not one but just saying.)

Extra flare and pizzaz to a username that's (possibly) overthetop, to look cool or because the username is already taken so they wanna do something over it.


EDIT: It's a bit more rare to see it these days however.

Sometimes its because a username is taken. Others think it looks cool. But this has been around way longer than 2016. I believe it has been around since the first decade of the 2000s

I got accounts on another website which is named XxPotatoKatxX, it makes the user looks cooler and basically helps you if the one with the “x”s are taken

also “only 7 year olds” is an understatement, any age can do it.
