I just thought… Why is scratch's mascot a cat?

Is it because if you remove s, r, last c, h you get cat?
Or is it because cats normally scratch or another reason?

Originally the mascot was Gobo, but they changed it to Scratch Cat for some reason. I don't think that was a bad decision though, Scratch Cat is an easy to recognize mascot.

But gobo was probably too and all the rest of the sprites such as tera and the rest of the main characters.

I imagine since these things were just random looking creatures, people might not want to use them as much as Scratch Cat, who is a cat, and most people know what a cat is. It also does fit with the word “Scratch”.

This is what I think too. Cats have scratching posts and scratch their claws to wear them down, so I suppose it makes a bit of sense.

As others have said, cats scratch things, and the program is named “Scratch”. I think it makes sense.

Oh, that's one of the reasons I thought. But would there be any other reasons?

They took the name “Scratch,” from the way that hip-hop disk jockeys scratch with music. They take pieces of music and then combine them together in unexpected and creative ways. Because of that, the mascot is a cat because cats scratch.

A note here that Tera, Pico, Giga, and Nano weren't created until Scratch 2.0. So by the time that the Scratch Team had to choose a mascot, I think they only had two choices: Scratch Cat and Gobo. (I guess they probably had other sprites already made, like an apple or something, but I figured they'd want to go with something a little more recognizable than that.)

Because they chose it to be a cat. If it was something else, people would still ask the same question.
