What's the deal with having the green flag at the start rather than having projects auto-start?

I don't like it - but I'm sure there is some reasoning behind it that might change my mind?

I think it's a good idea.
Many projects might have sounds or stuff you don't want starting while you're still reading the project notes or have another tab active. It prevents a project without a main menu to start a race (etc) without you!
It's true that some people like to keep stuff the way it is. That's why in general I am greatly in favour of having lots of options in a new version that allow you to almost make it feel like the old one. Then as the versions gradually update you can take the options away, knowing which one to keep thanks to what users have selected.
Of course there's a pretty slim chance the the dev team will spend so much time on allowing options, especially since it's primarily a “kids community”.

LS97On user pages and the explore page, I like it like this. However, on a project page, you went to the page to view the project, so it should automatically start there.

I think that would be the best approach!

There was a thread about this in the old testers forum - I think the consensus was for this new way of doing it. For one thing, if you open multiple tabs of projects a lot, flash can start to freak out if they all try playing at once. Although, that seems to be working better with more recent versions of the flash player on the new site.
For another, flash won't allow the project to get keyboard focus unless the user clicks on it first. So that means if you have the project running by default when the page loads, but without focus, when you go to hit that space bar to advance to the next page, your browser gets the key press event and scrolls down and pops the project off the top of your screen. XD

LightninHmmmm…I see. I still like my idea above more, but I see.

I can see how program design is so difficult when doing it for a large community – there are so many different valid options to try!

LS97So true…it makes sense that 2.0 development is slow…more thought is up into everything and everything is safe, secure and ready for the release.

When viewing pen art projects that are uploaded with the finished product, I like to be able to admire the penned image before the green flag starts. So yeahh I like the new way

The having lots of open projects in different tabs thing definitely applies to me, and I've found that the autostart is annoying. This is a great feature

This must be the oldest necropost ever on Scratch.
But since this has been brought up again, I think that having multiple projects open is a good reason for this. If you opened up a lot of projects and they all started loading at the same time, it might cause huge amounts of lag.

Eh semi support. It's good to not have a hassle of having to click the green flag. But at the same time it's not that hard to get used to clicking the green flag.
