Huh, so the font size does change! (Windows XP, Firefox). I wonder why the font size increases when switching to a different language, even if it's one that uses the same letters as Romanized English.

I refreshed my editor, and the font changed back to normal.

Sadly, my forum signature was eaten by an evil kumquat.

Some languages (e.g. Arabic) have to switch to use a larger font to be legible. But so far, only a few languages explicitly switch to larger fonts.

Cheddargirl, which language with Romanized English did you try when you saw the font size change?

Did the font size should return to normal when you went back to English?

You might wonder: What's the “normal” font for Scratch blocks in English? Since different systems have different fonts, Scratch tries several fonts: Lucida Grande, Verdana, Arial, and DejaVu Sans, and uses the first one of those it finds. But those fonts don't cover a lot fo the world's languages, so for many languages it falls back to some other font.

But when switching to a language that uses letters that are not in the default font, Scratch uses any font that has those letters. So that might explain a size shift for some languages.

Hi johnm, I was switching over to Filipino and back, the font size did not return to normal when I switched back to English. It's possible that the ñ letter might be the one that's stumbling the font size (although I find it a bit of stumper since those fonts are known to have support for that letter).

~ Whoops, I used my alt account to reply. Silly me.
