Tone Tag Definitions

Tone tags have become more and more used recently. I see them fairly frequently but due to them not being prevalent until recently, there's a lot of confusion on what tone tags mean. Googling it is obviously the easy solution, but the problem is that some tone tags have inappropriate meanings. Some people also might be using a school device so those websites may be blocked.

Here's what I think should happen: When someone posts their tone tag in a comment, the tone tag will be highlighted blue. When the tone tag is clicked (or tapped for mobile users) there will be a small pop up next to it that provides a concise explanation as to what the tone tag means.

Other websites already do similar things, but usually with definitions of words, such as the Britannica website. Click on any article there and there will usually be an explanation for what the word means. If there was a similar thing for Scratch with tone tags, it could prevent confusion and also prevent Scratchers from being exposed to inappropriate tone tags.

Here's what it looks like on the Britannica website:

People will just look up what it means because of natural curiosity. No need to add this.

This seems to case specific. What if someone mistypes their tone tags? (like /hj into /gj)? there is no reason to add such a specific item for such a specific purpose…

totally not posting here to overtake basilikos's italian translation w/ my chinese translation. Who shall win?

This fact is far from accurate.

You never know how somebody is going to approach this scenario, so “searching it up” is a rather unviable counterargument. Besides, we can't use workarounds to justify your claim that something is worthless, because most people already despise workarounds for blocks being used to verify their opposition to a block suggestion anyway.

Yes, but searching up the meaning of something is usually the one thing people do when they are confused. What else do you do?

I never said this was worthless. People despising workarounds is irrelevant unless it is actually hard to do - which this isn't. There can also be multiple meanings for certain tone tags, so a search engine would be better than a single definition.

here we go again

a) suggesting a dictionary of tone tags be added is entirely different to block workarounds, which are annoying to remember whereas it takes less than 30 seconds to google something (if you aren't using a nokia brick)
b) britannica is an encyclopedic website where this function makes sense, scratch is for coding
c) what does it even mean by people will approach this in different ways

Usually tone tags aren't attached to other words.

according to paddle2see he doesnt want to add any functionality to tone tags as they use a simple / that could clutter or add unneeded definitions. there was a 200 reply topic about this that was closed, please leave it at it

Maybe it could be if the user types something in it'll do that?
Maybe it they surround it with parentheses

I agree and disagree. I google words most of the time although this could be a setting to add just to make things easier

I don't think that's entirely how the filter works. If “cat” was a bad word, then it would be filtered out, but “catch” or “vacation” might not be. If you'd like a more concrete example, “discord” is censored in comments, but “aaadiscordaaa” is not.
