How do you add shadows to windows in a windowing system?

How do you add shadows to windows in a windowing system?
Maybe you could make it so that first you draw the window slightly offset and darker for the shadow, then draw the actual window on top of it.

Edit: Bah! Not again! What I said has already been said. 3 seconds late…
You could probably create two windows, one as a shadow and one as the window itself. You would make the shadow first then offset the x and y a bit so that the actual window looks like it is above the shadow window.
