ARM topic

(might be a dupe)

ARM is an up-and-coming CPU architecture. it boasts extremely high efficiency and a more open market (potentially breaking the monopoly Intel and AMD have). Apple has already moved to it, with Microsoft exploring creating a Windows version for ARM. it’s what powers the raspberry pi. ARM seems to be the future of CPU design. discuss here.

Nah Risc-V is the future. It's basically arm but open source - and the open source will increase adoption as they don't have to pay massive license fees

I like arm, it's unfortunate that sone things don't support it properly yet so I can't run them on termux (eg bun, deno)
learning aarch64 assembly is on my todo list

what makes you think businesses will suddenly adopt RISC-V instead of ARM?
If a cpu company wants to make an arm cpu, they have to pay ARM money, and hope they are allowed to, but if they want to make a risc-v cpu they don't have to do any of that.

I would be beyond surprised if any big companies moved to RISC-V
with manufacturers turning back to bigger dies (see: Apple) I REALLY doubt RISC-V's better small-die efficiency will matter much, especially since ARM is just like way faster and better supported rn

I don’t think the cost of ARM is prohibitive enough to drive companies away. ARM is already far more open than x86 ever was. RISC-V is mostly used for lower-power processors. I’m talking about the personal computer market, which ARM is increasingly being adopted in. Apple’s Mac (and to a lesser extent, the RPi) have brought the ARM architecture into the mainstream. IIRC Windows made an ARM dev kit just recently. RISC-V just doesn’t have that kind of adoption.

Personally, I prefer x86 for Windows and Linux, but ARM is better for low-power devices and high-speed ones, like Macs.

Low-power + high-speed? You can't get that on Windows OR Linux because there is basically nothing being done like there is for Macs. Apple is the only one seriously doing that.

Actually, iPhones have decent battery. But my M1 MacBook probably has a lot better battery.

linux is extremely common to run on ARM devices what? (see literally every android phone, chromebooks etc)
ms is working more towards better arm support in windows currently

yes exactly lol. pretty much anything embedded runs on arm. the cost overhead is like nothing (100 stm32h745s costs like $110 which is dirt cheap)
